Had this thought while reading another thread, but I thought I'd start my own for this question.

All the talk of aerodynamics has me thinking about the ITU style tri suits with the zipper at the back. Most have a lanyard to help zip and unzip, but do most people just let that lanyard hang off and flop around in the wind? I would think that would be a bit un-aero. the other option is detaching it once you get zipped up, but then it might be a struggle to re-attach and get it off.

I got the TYR Carbon tri suit in the trisports.com "mystery box" (that's a sweet deal btw... if they have your size, grab it!) and I like it, but I'm not sure how to deal with the zipper lanyard, and I'm wondering how this would be aerodynamically different than a normal 2 piece suit.

as far as the aero goes... disturbing the back is usually not a good thing.

When I zip mine up, I tuck the string under the suit. Check it prior to the bike and retuck if required. Otherwise, don't touch it until the run.

the only data I have ever seen on this was Jordan Rapp's visit to the tunnel where he had a strap like that flapping and they couldn't measure a difference.
Counter intuitive but that was what the data said. That's N=1. though

I race in an ITU suit, but there's no lanyard, and I've never really felt the need to have one. I get somebody to help me zip up in the t-zone and then it stays zipped up for the whole race. I can unzip it myself without the lanyard, but as I race Sprint/Oly I've never felt the need to do that during a race. If I raced long course I might.

I remember reading that too, don't remember where he was at doing the testing though. Seems very odd that an item flapping in the wind was neutral. Sometimes odd things are correct though

I looked it up after Marc's post: http://www.slowtwitch.com/Lifestyle/Rappstar_wind_tunnel_time_3887....

This post about it says it was negligible at ) degrees and less than 1 Watt at 10 Degrees... It seems more annoying than anything. I may just unsnap the lanyard after getting zipped up... that'll probably take care of it

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.
