I was 32 lbs. heavier, didn't own a bike, and had never entered a swimming pool for exercise. A co-worker suggested I give triathlon a shot when I talked about needing a carrot to chase for weight loss and wanted to give swimming a try. As much as I enjoyed seeing the pounds melt off, I think I enjoyed the training more.

It was a real challenge, not just exerting myself physically, but finding the time with a wife and two kiddos at home and not asking them to sacrifice too much for my sake. Triathlon has been so stimulating both physically and mentally. I can't really imagine giving it up.

Here's to one year in the books as a triathlete.

Congratulations - it's truly a life-changing decision.

Way to go! After many many years of dipping my toe in and not really doing much with triathlon, it was about a year ago that I decided to really jump in with both feet and do the work. Like you, I've lost weight, but the big win has been the mental fortitude I've built. It really is magic, isn't it? Here's to many more years!

For most people, there is a story in how they came to the sport as beginners. Some of the most inspiring of those beginner tales begin with health scares.

Is one month enough time to recover from my first marathon to go and do my first olympic tri? My alternative options are to do the 1/2 marathon and then do the olympic.

The one-arm drill. This drill will help you with body rotation, breathing, and pull. It also isolates one arm so you can really concentrate on what that arm is doing through the whole stroke cycle.
