I've never trained using sodium pills, but I do use the Powergel that has 4X the sodium of other gels. Each packet has 200mg of sodium.
If I plan on talking in 2-3 powergels per hour on the bike, do I need to take the sodium tabs?

Should I take a sodium pill before the swim? Do grocery stores carry them?

Actually, potassium's better for electrolye replacement. But, do you cramp a lot? Do you have a really high sweat rate? Is your race going to be really hot? Or long?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you might want to experiment with electrolyte replacement in training. Don't just start popping lots in a race, or you may have unexpected GI issues.

As for what to use, any online tri retailer will have "Endurolytes."

I don't sweat a lot and the HIM should be around 70-75. I sometimes get toe and foot cramps when I swim long distance, but I don't cramp while running or biking.
My usual training nutrition is Accelerade and powergel and they both contain sodium.
Should I think about taking potassium before the swim? I worry about the cold ocean water causing foot cramps.

Cramps from cold water aren't caused by electrolyte deficiency, but rather by blood being shunted to your core to keep you warm. If you wear a wetsuit, you should be OK (except for the foot cramps). I'm not sure what to recommend to help prevent that, except maybe for stretching your arches prior.

yeah good way is to look at your clothes if they are white from salt after a run then you are a salty sweeter and could use some. You are better with elcrolyte pills over sodium so you ever everything you need and not just salt

Electrolyte solutions would be the best, your body needs the balance potasium is in the cell where sodium is outside the cell and they work together when your muscles are performing! This link below explains it well! Aloha!

you should listen to the "Zen and the art of Triathlon" podcast...their latest download has two guest podcasters talking quite extensively about salt and nutrition. Pretty interesting show.
