Subject: Bike mileage milestone - anything cool to mark occasion?

Within the next 2-2.5 weeks I'll go over 20,000 miles on the bike.  I started tracking my distances in 2004 and some of the early years were lighter than a normal month for me now.

I know for many of you 20K isn't a big number at all, maybe for some it is.  Regardless, I'm proud of it so I'm wondering if any of you have "celebrated" or commemorated passing through a particular distance milestone as you experienced it?

At a minimum I thought I'd take a selfie, however if there are other cool things to consider please share.

Again, the mileage is relevant only to me, I'm not at all trying to sound like it's a big deal compared to the huge miles many of you have done...

Congrats. That is a long way and I like the you are celebrating. With another 4901 miles you would have gone around the world at the equator!

I'd probably mark the ride with some friends and maybe ride to dinner and have them buy me stuff.

Definitely get a picture and spend the next 4901 miles planning the next party.

Not nearly as impressive as you, but a few years ago when I met my goal of riding 200 hours in one year (I know, not much, but for me it was), I set it up so it would happen during a bike tour in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately our route got shortened by heavy rain and flooding, so I always didn't make my 200 hours, but I finally hit it mid-morning on December 31. I stopped at the next scenic spot I found and asked someone to take a picture. Then I "celebrated" by riding about another seven hours! There were a bunch of gung-ho cyclists on the tour who'd been frustrated with the shortened days, and we finally had good weather that day, so several of us rode the entire (I think) 96 miles. Most of those miles were hilly, and, due to the landslides, not entirely paved. It was quite a celebration. We managed to finish just before dark. Of course at that point it was New Year's Eve, so, after jumping into the pool in our sweaty bike stuff, then cleaning up. we just continued celebrating with food and beer!

Not sure that's easily replicable, but maybe pick a favorite route/place to hit that milestone and take a commemorative selfie?

My goal this year is to ride everyday, I have missed some but I also have done 2 rides in a day a couple of times which I think is fair. I am currently at 225 rides according to Strava and we are on the 229th day so I am not doing too bad. Anyways - My reward, if I make it, will be a new pair of Sidi shoes.

200 hours in one year is absolutely impressive!!    Do you typically base your rides on length of time vs. a particular mileage requirement?

I was curious as to where I would come in so far this year in hours and I'm ~ 120-130 hours.... Most weeks I get three rides of ~ 30-ish miles at ~ 1:50.... Once in a while I get a fourth ride or my weekend ride will be ~ 40 miles..

I likely won't celebrate the same way you did when you hit your 200th hour by riding another seven hours...

Another poster suggested a new bike which seems much more fun!!

I like incentives so now I'm at least committed to another 4,901 miles after I hit 20K!!

And I'm imagining how cool it would be to do a destination trip to coordinated with my circumvention of the planet....

I think doing one of those TDF stage vacations where the organizers supply the sag vehicle, the hotels and meals etc., would be an amazing way to celebrate 20,491...

I tried a running challenge once where we ran every day for 100 days and it proved to be very logistically challenging... I can only imagine what you're up against to ride every day.

Is your requirement just to pedal every day or do you have minimum time and/or distances?

Nice job!

I have done just about 6000km so far over the 225 rides. This works out to an average of about 27km per ride. Some are short MTB rides that might only be 10km but take 30-45min and some are much longer road rides. I dont count ice cream runs with the kids or little stuff like that but basically if I am putting it on Strava then it meant something and I count it. I am sure if I wanted to pick through each and every ride I could find some pretty weak rides but I could also pull out some truly epic ones as well - I think it balances out. Logistically the summer is actually the hardest as I dont do trainer rides indoors. In the shoulder seasons and winters I do a lot on the trainer and its made easier as I have my laptop hooked up to a projector and trainer rides = TV time.

“Less is more,” is a common buzz phrase in endurance sports today. It refers to the trend of training less but focusing on intensity and quality rather than on quantity.
