Leaving for Worlds next Wednesday after work. Yikes--not sure how I will ever get everything ready between my class
(sub plans
) and all the crap that triathlon involves. It's the 70.3
(half-iron distance
) World Championships, which rotates to different places each year. Mooloolaba, Australia
(near Brisbane
) this year.
(There are still people at work who don't get that I'm not going to Kona! That would be interesting as have never done a full IM and not really inclined to train for one anytime soon!
) 1900m swim, 90 km bike, 21 km run. Long enough for me!
2-4 hour trainer rides are tough, especially the mental aspect. But when one's other option is a solo 2-4 hours of repeated 4-mile loops of an industrial park
(the only place nearby where one can ride a tri bike in aero with something approaching "safety"--probably not, actually, by US standards, but safer than elsewhere here
), no toilets or drinkable water in said park, and accessing park by a 3 mile ride each way on a busy road where there is probably a fatality a week, plus unstable weather in rainy season and hot, humid conditions year-round, the trainer starts to look quite attractive. At least on the trainer there are the options of TV, videos, and/or music, as well as a fridge full of cold drinks and munchies!
For anyone planning such rides, my advice--good bike snacks that you enjoy, something interesting to watch
(or at least stare blankly at while you try to hold your power level and not puke
) and a very structured workout. My power meter has saved me from insanity
(or perhaps just pushed me into a new level of it.
