Subject: Weight gain from training?
I am a newbie and was curious if anyone has gained weight during their first few weeks of their training program? I began my first tri training program (20 week run focused) three weeks ago. I started out at 203 and have gained 5 lbs since. I am 5'9" and would like to be 175-180lbs. I thought by increasing my exercise output and keeping the calories the same I would pretty much lose weight quickly...I know that muscle weighs more than fat, but i don't think that 3 weeks would add that much muscle. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Must be lean muscle gain.

I started weight training a couple of months ago and have gained weight from that, even though I watch what I eat.  I noticed that since I have cut back on my running I have been slowly gaining.  I ride my bike a lot, but it doesn't keep the weight off like running does.  I have also noticed that after an intense training weekend, or after an intense race, I gain a couple of pounds a day or two after the race.  What is up with that?

A lot of times people think that just because they are training for a triathlon, they will automatically lose weight - not true.

You still need to burn more calories than you consume. How do you know your calories are the same? Are you measuring foods and tracking the calories somewhere? Do you use fitday? What is a typical days training and menu like?

Also, muscle does not weigh more than fat -- a pound is a pound and chances are? you haven't gained even 1/2 pound of muscle. Muscle is very hard to 1) gain and 2) maintain for an endurance athlete.

When I start to build muscles not previously worked,  I find I retain a lot of fluid, probably as part of the healing process.  Once the muscles adjust to the work load the weight goes back down.  Also, eating more carbs make you retain more water.  Watch the salt as well.

Most likely it is water as sjroh said. Keep up the good work, it WILL pay off.

Not sure if you are a women or man, but I have heard for women it is very hard to even put on one pound of muscle in month or two. I often hear the thought I haven't lost weight or I gained idea but doubt that is true for most of us...maybe if you do weights and gain muscle mass easily.

When I work out hard I often retain water....after a race my weight will go up 3-5 pounds for up to 5 days.

Have you changed what your diet? Last tri season I gained about 8 pounds even though I was working out 8-10 hours a week. I'm sensitive to processed carbs...cut them out and I lose weight slowly, eat them and I gain slowly. Last year I ate processed carbs mainly bread this year, I haven't and I've lost weight.

Don't be discouraged...your body is getting used to the new routine...look at your diet? Protein, veggies & fruit with good natural carbs?

Well considering my first year of running where I ran 4 marathons and 1 ultra as a way of trying to lose weight I gained 25 lbs. how did I do that? simple keep in mind that you can eat a little more when you work out but its easy to over eat. I stopped doing that and then the weight came off.

often people think they're burning way more calories during their workouts than they really do... 30 mins of jogging only burn like 150 cals... that's not a whole lot...

I am REALLY hungry when I get done exercising.   It is pretty easy to increase your intake with your exercise.  Triple check that you are not increasing eating along with exercise.

Did you just weigh yourself once?  I have noticed I can have 5+ pound fluctuations day to day.  ALso, you will probably only lose .5 to 1 pound a week with the sprint programs.

A steriod user could not gain 5 pounds of muscle in 3 weeks!!! It is probably not fat either though because a pound of fat is 3500 calories - that is 17,500 extra calories.

I have been logging what I take in for about a month now and the portions have stayed about the same. I say about because i am trying to cut my meat portions in half and increase my veggie intake. I also eat a peice of fruit for my afternoon snack instead of junk food, and have cut down to one cup of coffee a day and all but cut out the beer (that is what hurts the most). Unfortunately those good tasting beers were adding to a large spare tire.

What do you guys recommend as far as daily calories for a 35 yo male that is 5'8" and 205lbs? As I said earlier, my goal weight is 175-180lbs.

Again: Post a typical days training and diet. Be as specific as possible.

I am following the 20 wk run focused sprint program...as far as training...my cycling is now done on an exercise bike...buying a bike soon.

As far as diet:
Breakfast (fast): either whole wheat toast w/ peanut butter and a banana or yogurt smoothie with lowfat yogurt (1C), 1/2 C mixed berries, 1/2 banana, 1 Tbls of peanut butter...washed down by H2O and cup of coffee.

snack: if time apple or necterine

lunch: pack of tuna or turkey sandwich with mustard

snack: fruit like above of pretzels (low salt)

dinner: chicken, fish or red meat with veggies...trying to limit white rice and pasta

snack: cup of yogurt with blueberries (good stuff, but my daughter always grabs her a spoon as well)

repeat the next day...trying to work on my swimming form and my running efficiency...

There are calculators online you can use to estimate your daily calorie requirements... and calculators to estimate calories burned in various sports as well. I think all of them run a little high, but if you look at several and take an average you'd at least have a starting point and then you can adjust up or down as necessary.

JBS, depending on your activity level, it looks like you may not be eating enough. I'm not sure about your portion sizes. I'm 5'4" ~148 pounds and I can lose weight on 2000 calories because of my workout schedule. If you are not eating enough your body will hang on to anything you give it.

Also, water weight is a good possibility. Good luck!

water would make alot of sense. not only because how quikcly it was put on but most people are deydraded all the time and when you start training to tend to start to drink like you should getting your body to its fully hydrated body weight.
