Subject: I thought it was common knowledge...

Being of average intelligence and education, I always figure what I know is common knowledge.  My new squeeze was surprised and happy that I knew what a roux was - I pretty much thought it was something everyone knew.  So -

Do you know what a roux is?

Not only do I know, but  can make it as well.  Not that it's hard, it just takes time to do it properly.

I would not have known unless I had dated a chef.  And I would not be able to make when if my life depended upon it.

I took for granted that everyone had read the same books I had to read in High School.  When I was in the Navy, I found that this was not the case.  Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman.  I am not incredibly well read, but it surprised me how many people had never read Romeo and Juliet or any Shakespeare.  Thats not to say it wasn't taught...but did they read it.
