I've been following the training guide for doing my 1st tri, AND been going to a registered dietician and still can't seem to lose any weight. The most I've gone down is 10 lbs and that's in 13 months!! Even the dietician is at odds with my body. I've been tested by the doc for all kinds of things even thyroids and nothing. All is normal, HDL, LDL, BP, Chol - all normal. Any one out there that might be able to help figure this out?? (I've just turned 50 - would old age do it?) just kidding....

First off...Don't get discouraged!! Believe it or not, there are studies out there that show you can be fit and overweight. So, keep focus on staying fit!! Ask yourself this, even if your weight has stayed the same, what about your dress size! We all know that muscle weighs more than fat, but we seem to forget that when we start working out! Also, start counting your calories and find where some of the extras are hanging out (creamer in coffe, added sugar, non-diet sodas), and try trimming some of the excess out. There is also something for being said with loving and accepting yourself as you are instead of what you're not! Self-esteem is a HUGE factor, so just keep encouraging yourself and hang in there. Oh yeah, drink lots and lots of water!!

Hi Athena, I'm over 50 myself and had the same problem until I trained for a marathon--then the pounds came off.   Have you been doing the same exercise routine for a long time?  If so, I suggest that you change that routine and maybe add some weights into the mix.  Even if you add only a couple of miles extra a week to your run, you would probably see some more weight loss.

Good luck

Evelyn

thanks for all the input.... maybe a different exercise regime would do it - at this point I'll try other options. Yes the clothes fit much better (dropped 6 pant sizes) the reshaping of my body is unbelievable. I even quit drinking alcohol totally. That's something my body has trouble with 'cause growing up 'Italian', I was weened on wine!! Knowing now though, that's not the weight problem, I'll go back to it, nothing wrong with a good beer now & then. I'll keep you posted

Get someone to do your percentage body fat. That may help you and your dietician. Maybe add stregnth training. Hope this helps

Wow, Athena - dropping 6 pant sizes is wonderful! I'm no specialist on this but our bodies do hit plateaus. You might be on one for now. I read a lot about losing weight in Cooking Light magazine and Bicycling magazine. They suggested a couple things:

2 workouts in one day
a 90 minute bike ride at least once a week
higher intensity, like Tae Bo - really get sweating! - that's when the last of my pounds came off (now I'm working on my next set of lbs to lose!)
eat less, but very nutritiously, workout more - it's still calories in versus calories out, I think!

I'm sure you've done the math and have measured your body for tons of inches lost. Be happy about that and they way the clothes fit. I think you're doing awesome!

An adder here: that 90 minute bike ride IN ADDITION to the other full workouts you do that week.

me too ... me too!!! I've somewhat given up on the weight for now as I as making myself nuts to the point i had just about stopped eating and well you can imagine that is not at all helpful when you're training for a tri!!! I never said I was bright Anyway, now I look at landmarks. Collarbone is so pronounced now that you'd think I was Calista Lockhart and FINALLY the hipbones are starting to pop out from under the flab. :D I was beginning to believe that I was eating in my sleep or someone was secretly adding caloric value to the food I was eating LOL.  I still basically weigh the same as I did when I started this venture but with continued effort the weight must be converting to muscle as the bones are poping out and that's what I now take solace in rather than getting on the scale...well ok I still get on the scale way too often but I don't let the numbers bother me much most of the time.  I also have a deal with self not to eat less than 1500 cal.  You really don't want you're body going to starvation mode which is the one catch to calories in->calories out.

I might add that I like metric scales sooo much better!!! I feel so much lighter when I weigh ! LOL

I've always read that 1 pant size = 5 lbs (like between a 9 and 10). If you've gone from a 16 to a 10, that would be equivalent to 30 lbs lost. If you went down that many pant sizes but your weight has only dropped 10 lbs, I think it would be safe to say you've actually lost 30 lbs of fat but added 20 lbs of muscle.

Anyway, if you can afford it, go get your body fat measured via water immersion. Then get it done again in a month or two. I don't know how much it costs, though. A cheaper alternative would be to use www.mybodycomp.com. I think you need to find some new numbers for measuring your progress because you ARE making progress! Way to go!

As I've said before - you (guys) are awesome. This is why I wanted/needed your input. You make me feel like I've lost 100 lbs!! (Which is what I have to lose!!) Anyway, thnx, I know it's a tough road losing, but I like the idea of 1 size = 5 lbs. It makes me feel a whole lot better about the accomplishments. I'm gonna keep "tri'n'" :-)
