Age Group Rank = 7/
Pre-race routine:

Nothing special. Showed up set up transition and waited.
Event warmup:

None. I was frozen. Does shivering count as a warm up? I knew I could not affort to was any energy on a warmup.
Run
  • 28h 45m
  • 3.1 miles
  • 9h 16m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

I was so cold that I wore my fleece jacket on the run. Didn't start sweating until mile 2. PR'd the run so overall it went very well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing under the circumstances.
Transition 1
  • 04m 15s
Comments:

Made a pit stop. Changed jackets, put on knee warmers and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more before heading out.
Bike
  • 3h 25m 56s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.32 mile/hr
Comments:

Needed to drink more. I also need something to put my food etc. in when on the hills. Had a hard time shifting with peanutbutter crackers in one hand and waterbottle in the other. Made better time than I had expected. Posted my higest average speed for any race.
What would you do differently?:

I am thinking about getting the dreaded Bento Box so I can keep my hands free.

Considering this was the longest ride of my life I can't complain this time.
Transition 2
  • 05m 4s
Comments:

Made second pit stop. Legs were stiff and I took my sweet time. Took of jacket and knee warmers.
What would you do differently?:

Put on sunscreen!
Run
  • 3h 20m 10s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 15m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

After the first 1/2 mile it turned into a long walk. My legs were shot and they never came back. I felt like I was out of breath the entire time even with low HR. I managed to run most of the downhills but it was not much. All the people I passed on the bike passed me on the run. I kept checking the time to see how close I was to cutoff. I made it but it took longer than I had expected.
What would you do differently?:

Considering my longest run was only 6.3 miles I did not expect much. I had hoped to run close to half the distance but I'll bet I did not run more than 2 miles.

I do need to run after my long rides. I seem to have difficulty with this.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the finish line, picked up my medal and hit the chow line.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

4 months base, only tained for Oly distance, etc... Wind on the bike hurt but the cooler temps. helped. I was dehydrated on the run and I am sure that hurt as well. It really comes down to not training for this distance. My goal was to just see how far I could go and if I was under 8 hrs I would be happy. I beat my goals but I know I can do much better.

Event comments:

Volunteers were great. Plenty of aid stations. Missed the post race activities so I can't say how they were. Race was organized and everthing seemed to go well. Finishers medals were good as was the sweatshirt. Nothing special in the shwag bag.
Weather is the biggest factor in how tough this course will be. The wind can be a killer.

I just noticed that I could have raced in this race as a Clyde. (190 and up).  I could have won first place.  Guess I need things more carefully before I sign up.

Way to put in the time and stick to it.  You learned many lessons that will be valuable to take into next year.  I hear you about the sunscreen, I started feeling it on my neck about 1/3 the way into the run.  Didn't even cross my mind as I was shivering waiting to start.
