Does anyone know how one gets into the usat age group championships?

A friend of mineand fellow BTer  has been doing very well placing in AG at tri's and probably has even placed in a qualifying race.  I have been searching for the in and outs of how the system works and dont find too much info.

I copied and pasted this from the USA Triathlon website. Hope it helps.......

2006 USA Triathlon National Age Group Championships Qualification Standards

Every athlete at the 2006 National Age Group Championships must qualify at a USAT-sanctioned event to race. This event is the only intermediate-distance triathlon for which athletes have to meet a strict qualification.

How do you qualify?

Grand Prix Series events and Special Qualifiers will qualify the top 33 percent or top five finishers (whichever is greater) in each age group.
Any non-championship USAT sanctioned event will qualify the top 10 percent or top finisher (whichever is greater) in each age-group.
Any athlete who has ever competed as a member of Team USA (triathlon or duathlon) will automatically qualify.
All-American and honorable mention All-Americans from the 2005 USAT National Rankings automatically qualify.
The top 10 finishers in each age group from the 2004 USAT National Age Group Championship automatically qualify.
Athletes can meet qualification at any sanctioned event between July 9, 2005 and July 2, 2006.

Once qualification is met, athletes do not need to do anything special except indicate where they met qualification on the National Age Group Championship race application. There will be no other steps required.

USA Triathlon will do an audit of those who have met qualification shortly after the receipt of the race application. If an athlete does not get a written request for more information within two weeks of submission of the race application, the athlete can rest assured that the entry has been accepted. From there, the athlete's name will appear on the participant list.

Subject: One small (but maybe critical) change for 2007...
There was a verbiage change made to the qualifications for 2007.

This one from the 2006 qual's:

*Grand Prix Series events and Special Qualifiers will qualify the top 33 percent or top five finishers (whichever is greater) in each age group.

Was changed to (see page http://www.usatriathlon.org/Events/Age_Group_Championship/Age_Group...

*Special Qualifying Races (TBD) will qualify the top 33 percent or top five finishers (whichever is greater) in each age group.

I was told via e-mail from the USAT that any race listed on the USAT site is a qualifying race as far as being USAT sanctioned. That little change from "Grand Prix" to "Special Qualifying Races" may cut me out if it doesn't include Grand Prix races.

The qualifying period started July 9th, and goes to June 23rd next year.

I competed this year in Kansas City.  Earned a World's spot but couldn't afford to go.  It was great fun!

I think it'll come up on the USAT calendar when it's ready -- there will most likely be a link to the race application form on the calendar, and on that application will be a space for the race that you qualified in... At least that's my best guess. Never done it myself, so I can't say for sure.
