I don't own a bike yet so I bike on the stationary bike at my gym. The other day I did 21.15 miles in 30 minutes (that would be 42 mph average....) Is this even possible or is there something wrong with the bike. The resistance was on 12 (maximum is 20, I think.) Should I enroll in the Tour de France?

Readout on stationary bikes are notoriously innacurate. I guess there are lies, damn lies, and stationary bikes.

In my experience, stationary bike mileage/speed does not remotely correlate to road speed. I would recommend doing indoor workouts based on RPE, not the machine readouts.

I agree with bear.  When I do stationary bike workouts, I just log my time.

Was it simulating exiting a plane?

No that's not a realistic speed. I've found that the computers on stationary bikes are pretty useless. Best to go by effort and rpm when using one of these. Try to keep the rpms around 90ish and adjust the effort around that, keeping in mind that you are probably going to want to work on building base so it should not be an all out effort, it should be sustainable. Don't even worry about speed.

RPE is the rate of perceived exertion.  Basically, how hard you think you are working.

Mileage on a stationary bike doesn't corellate to road miles. Use time and effort (heart rate) instead.

Yeah go ahead and sign up for the '07 Tour. Don't worry about not owning a bike yet, all the bike mfg companies will be chomping at the bit to set you up.

Additonally don't worry about not having a team either, at 42 mph they would just slow you down anyway.

Make sure you have some good sunglasses, because going that fast the wind can really dry your eyes out if they are not protected.

However, if you think the stationary bike might be wrong for some reason (which I can't imagine) you can just do what I do while riding my trainer, just go with 20 mph. So if you ride for 45 minutes you'd log aprox 15 miles.

It could be in kilometers too. But even then, it sounds like it's a little off.

If you put your sweet Trek on a trainer, than yeah, sure 42mph sounds reasonable. Maybe even a little slow if you are Jdogg. Just not on a stationary bike, that's all I'm saying.

I went 42 mph on a bike one time. It was a Honda Shadow. Nice ride. Yeah, 42 is booking, like down a mountain or something....

Like perspective on that- they do maybe 60 downhill in the tour, and if you've seen that....well, tehy are booking.
