Ooooooh GO FOR IT!

Oh, you just liked the pics. At this point, you'll agree to almost anything. All you need now is some tequila. And maybe some ice cream cake.

From my RR when we met at Steelman in July ..."the sky is the limit for him. I expect BT will see big things from him in the not to distant future. "

I predicted it for you Dan, now make it happen. Stud!

As usual, DonTracy has some great points.

Go do it. Take the $1000 for a very limited contract, THEN negotiate for a long-term deal.

How do you feel about NB shoes for the rest of your races?

runningwoof - 2006-09-21 2:15 PM Wow...I wish I looked like that....I was contacted by a friend in the SF bay area for casting of a similar variety. Hard core bikers and/or triathletes. I just laughed. Besides the extra insulation I have...there is also the pelt of fur that seems to cover my chest.

i like a nice chest pelt. but I guess coming from a lesbian, that means precious little to a gay man.

Thanks...It means a lot spiritually....but physically...not too much...But it does mean that I get a lot of attention from a certain group of gay men!

yeah. i was kinda freaked out by a certain frequent poster here when I learned he had a wife!

Everyone knows I'm married, Hollis!

Dan - count me as another vote for you to go for it.  Just stay away from the casting couch!

you really where a size 9.5? that seems a bit small for a male's feet, but either way, go for it!

now if only my feet were 3 sizes smaller, and my legs actually mirrored the miles i run...the poison ivy on them certainly doesn't help the situation...and if my love for chocolate didn't show up as evidence in my bum and hips...

i'd say go for it, as gas is cheaper by the day anyway!

umm...

$1000 seems cheap for a national print campaign. If you get it, and I do think you could get it, see if you can up the fee. If they want to use you, they'll be willing to pay more.

Also, see if you can put a time limit on the use. For example, three months or six months. Then if they want to run it longer, negotiate for another fee. The one thing you don't want to do is sign over unlimited rights for perpetual use. Who knows, it could become a signature campaign that could run for years.

And if they want you, they will be willing to pay more.

But yea, go for it.

Don, I know you are a professional photographer and would know better than me, but I thought "wow $1000 is a lot". We get those emails a lot around here for Triathlon and running magazines and Road Runner sports, etc. and they usually pay only $100-$150 / hour.

Usually, these things break out according to how long the image will run, where it will run, and the category of the user.

So editorial use for something like a magazine ought to come in way less than national advertising use for a major brand like NB.  Catalog work for something like road runner would come in somewhere between, probably closer to the editorial fee.

So for advertising, the fee really is based more on the use, rather than the amount of time it takes to do the shoot.  Of coarse, the market is the final determiner, so if people are willing to work for less, the client will be happy to pay less.

Having said that, I'm really not an expert on modeling fees.  I rarely use models in my own work, and generally only for very limited placement.  My gut just says that $1000 is cheap for a national campaign for a major brand.

McFuzz probably has the right strategy.  Take the $1000.  Try to limit the amount of time it will run.  Then renegotiate if they want to run it longer.

You know what they say about big hands and big feet....Big shoes and Big gloves!!

I'll make a deal with everyone...If I get it, THEN I'll worry about how long they are going to run it for.  :P  But I can see your point Dontracy!  Now to find a friend to go up there with me and beat up anyone else Auditioning...

7 and 9.5 are typical sample size shoes (the ones the reps pack around) and they are considered the perfect size to display to sell.  you can hold them easily, they look cute or cool... an amazing amount of research goes into it..

for a photo shoot though, and 1k for the athlete, it sounds like NB's agency in trying to get a cheap deal.  hell, NB could get you any size shoe you needed for the shoot, and 1k is like them throwing quarters at you as you run by.

but - someone will take it, and their feet will fit, it might as well be you. negotiating may be moot.  but it would sure as hell be fun!

good luck!

Exactly.  Hand a man or woman who wears a size 7 a size 10 or 11 shoe and they will think the thing is a water ski and never want one.  Hand a guy who wears a 12 a size 7 and he'll think it's a kid shoe.  It's all about marketing.  If you ever see a shoe on a display in a shoe store and it is not 8.5, 9 or 9.5 it means they are out of those sizes (or the store employees aren't doing their jobs right).

I've worked at a couple of different stores and they displayed the smallest shoe size they had. It looks uniform that way and takes up less space. For women it was usually a 5.5-6.5 and men around a 9. Once those sizes sold out, they would put up the next smallest size.

Size 9 was the smallest men's shoe? Jeez....I wear an 8-8.5. That's discrimination against those of us with smaller tootsies.

I said "around a 9." It depends on the brand of shoe. Better stores carry more options.

So...you're saying you worked in a crappy store?

I'm kidding. I'm waiting for coffee to kick in yet. Although I must say, I am freaked by all the people with permanent skis around here.

Update from Friday:

Ok...Thanks to you guys, I decided to go ahead and take my chances with the New Balance Ad.  Thank you for all the kind words.  Granted, Nancy just said, "They said exactly what I said..."  But she's biased!

So I left the house at 7:15 and headed North to DC.  I didn't hit any traffic the entire way so it was an awesome drive.  I got progressively nervous as the drive went along.  I got to the parking lot at 10:20 (appt was at 10:30).  Before I left, Nancy and I went through my running stuff and picked out what she thought I looked best in.  I must have changed like 10 times!  But since she's the woman...I listened.  I got there and there were 4 other guys and 1 girl there.

I walked in and was my usual bubbly self.  I smiled a lot and shook everyone's hands.  I was the only really outgoing personality in the room (outside of the photographer).  I filled out some forms and waited for my turn.  I looked around the room and it seemed like the other people just weren't into it that much.  Maybe I was 'too' into it.  Not sure.   I did  make some observations though.  NOW...I'm not a completely pompus and conceited person, but if they were going purely based on looks...I had it in the bag!!

The photographer came over to us and handed each of us some clothes to put on.  I kicked myself for not bringing my New Balance gear to seperate myself.  I told the photographer that I should have worn it and he just smiled and said, it wouldn't of hurt.  One of the guys got running pants and a jacket and the rest of us got running shorts and a Dri Fit top (non-singlet).  We each had on a pair of Orange size 9.5 NB shoes.  He took a head shot and a body shot of each of us.  I was the last to go.  I made sure that I talked to him and made general conversation and the like.   This I learned from interviewing for a job!  If they remember you, you're more likely to get the job if they have to make a choice between two people.

So after the photo's, we changed back into 'our' clothes and headed out to a park to run.  They purposely had me go last.  Everyone else ran towards the camera, past it and then back across the field ONCE.  When it was my turn, they had me do it 3 times.  NOW...that could mean two things.  1) I sucked so bad that I had to do it 3 times to get it right...or 2) They wanted to make sure they got good shots of me.  I'm taking #2!!

After we were all done, we started to walk back to the office.   The other runners just left and I walked back to the office talking and chatting up the camera girl.  She asked me all kinds of questions that the others didn't get asked.  When I got back in the office, I made sure that I 'closed' them hard.  Another techique that I learned from Interviews.  I said I just wanted to make sure that I had everything done.  Basically, you have them look over your 'resume' before you leave and they can make comments.  But...it also puts your resume on TOP and you're the last person they see and the first person (in theory) they remember.  So I shook hands all around and said that I hoped to hear back from them really soon.  And they said, "I think you will".

I was so excited!  I was myself and I actually did something that was extrodinary.  Even if I don't get it, I gave it my best and that's what counts.  The photo shoot will take place between October 4 - 7 and I should hear something late this week, I hope!

It was a total of 6 hrs driving and 1 hr for the interview, but it was WELL worth it.

Thank you everyone for the encouragement and motivation to go and do it.  Even though Nancy says I should have just listened to her.
