1689 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Happy to hear you are on your way to recovery Mike and well done on the golf! I went practicing this weekend too, I am happy to report that no drive went 200 yards. Great that you are also getting better Nicole and yes, baby steps! As boring as it may sound. Yes, I do track calories (which worked great a few years ago), still not drinking much alcohol (which worked great last year) but none of these seem to work this year. I suspect that crashing half way through my half marathon may have been because of that calorie deficit I had started the week before (even if on the day I was careful to fuel properly) so I will give it another couple of weeks before I try something else. First Brwim of the season today! Or rather br, b home again because I forgot my wetsuit, wim. The water was much warmer than 2 weeks ago and I swam 400 meters this time. Andrew—sorry to hear about your colleague. I did a 90’ Z2 ride today, followed by strength training in what I always think of as the big boy gym—where all the 20-25yo musclehead dudes lift at the uni gym. I don’t go in there much, but I’ve worked my way up past the weights available in the other weight rooms, so I had to expand my horizons. The gym was pretty empty today, because we are now in summer session and there aren’t many students on campus. It was a good workout, but took forever because there were so many racks of weights to look through for the proper dumb bells! |

Member 2860 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Hey, hey party people! What's everyone up to this week? I closed yesterday with my first OWS of the yearout at the local lake last night. The tri club swims every Monday night across the lake (c. 0.45mi one way) all summer long, and I know I should do it more, but they don't start until 6pm and frankly, by 6pm, I'm winding down and getting ready for bed. I do not want to be out swimming across a lake. But...our pool is currently closed for maintenance, so I did yesterday. For the first time out in open water since September, I felt pretty good. Water temp was cool, but not shockingly cold. I probably could have done it without a wetsuit, but I wore mine just to get used to it. Sighting wasn't even a disaster. I mean, I didn't even come close to sliding over the dam this time! Today was a 1:15 interval ride/55' tempo run brick...oof...it was a tough workout, but I got it done and hit the paces and powers I was supposed to. I even was in the target HR zones on the run. Apparently, I just have to warm up with 75' on the bike so my HR will do what it is supposed to do on the run. :D Good think I do long course, I think I'll get there on race day. |

1689 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Well done on your first OWS of year. I totally get that it's not a good time for you. It would be like asking me to cross a lake at 6am! this week has started well, on Monday a little strength session at lunch time and a brwim after work. Then I had planned to run 5k at lunch on Tuesday but forgot that I had an appointment to get my hair cut and I had rehearsals with the band in the evening so I had a rest day instead. Moved the 5k to Friday which I was planning as a rest day. Tonight, run intervals, tomorrow, bike commute to work (17k one way, not sure what I'll do) and swim in the evening. Saturday and Sunday long ride and long run and a swim or two. Last weeend before the first tri of the season |

Member 2860 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Two tecovery workouts for me today. 90’ Z1 spin this morning and 45’ Z1 run this afternoon. Has been a crazy day here. The overall director of my archaeological site died this morning and so there has been a flurry of activity to deal with all that means to our group (40+ researchers). Despite being 84 years old, he didn’t really have a plan for this. It will all work out in the end, I’m sure, but a bit of unanticipated chaos coming down the pipe over the next few days/weeks. Expert 4651 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Crazyland in Gretchen's world? Say it ain't so!!! Seriously though, sorry for the loss and hope the project turns out OK with a minimum of drama, though it is academia right, so who knows? Visited my primary care doc whom I've known for close to twenty years so he knows my history and penchant for training/racing etc (and my injury history LOL). BP is back to normal now, so that's good, and he didn't hear anything abnormal in heart or lungs. We're still waiting on the echo results so I'm allowed to train but not redline until cleared from the cardio-man, which I hope will be soon. He mentioned Afib as a possibility which is a pain in the neck to nail down, lots of people have it (including many athletes) and it rarely is a problem (but sometimes is). Hopefully my little chest monitor would detect that. I've had a couple of good medium days of training, 5K+ on the treadmill yesterday with a couple of shorter intervals and an hour in Z2/Z3 on the bike this morning. Onward, sorta. Gotta find the pool and get in the river soon, too. |

Regular 1550 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Not having a brilliant training week.I've run 3/3 evenings on the treadmill, but all have been a bit of a struggle. None more so than last night when I attempted a critical velocity interval workout. Not sure if it's my accumulated fatuige, the TM paces being off or something else but for the first time in ages I shortened the main set of a workout. The plan called for 6 x 4min intervals, I only made it 4. I'll keep on keeping on, an hour Z2 foundation run planned for tonight, so that shouldn't be too taxing. But I need to be in bed nice and early, hopefully a couple nights really good sleep might help me get back to the swing of things. |

AFib doesn't sound fun, but if that's what it turns out to be it's definitely not the end of the world. Like you say it seems to be annoyingly common with endurance athletes, but once diagnosed and sorted everyone seems to be able to get back to the endurance lifestyle. If you're going to have a ticker issue, Afib is probably the one to have. |

Well at least it was daylight, not with a headlamp like last time they did that (I didn't go that day). Not much of a workout as I was very careful and thus very slow. So I went off on my own after that and did 10 x 30sec short intervals, just to get my HR up. Edited by Rollergirl 2024-05-16 3:53 AM |

1989 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Hi all! This week has been crazy in terms of work and lots of early appointments so I haven't done much activity. Hammie continues to improve, and I have my first PT session tomorrow. Here's my rough plan starting Saturday: If PT says it's okay, I'm going to go to Master's practice Saturday. Worst case, I just pull the whole time. Also if PT says it's okay: Walk a mile a day 20 min arm/upper body 3x/week 10 min core every day (20 min on non-upper body days) 20 min stretching PT exercises as needed/able Gretchen - I'm sorry for your loss! Definitely everything will ultimately work out, but sudden changes like that definitely make things tough for the short-term. Mike - Glad things are sounding good, and hopefully it's not Afib, but glad to hear it's manageable! Andrew - I like the plan to focus on sleep. You've been working pretty hard so some rough runs are to be expected! Nat - Way to push yourself on your own after the group workout! |

Member 2860 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Today was a rough one. We ended up having to put our dog down today. She was 15.5 years old, so she had a good life and it was time, but it is never an easy thing to do. I managed to get in a 48’ interval run, which is hard to do through tears, but my scheduled swim and strength sessions didn’t happen. The pool wasn’t opened back up on schedule and then I just didn’t want to leave the house for the gym later. Letting them go this week. |

Although technically they may be pets, dogs are very much part of the family. |

Sorry for your loss, she was in your life for a very long time, you can take comfort in that, but the longer they are with us, the deeper the void they leave. Good decision not going the the gym later, you and your wife need some mourning time together, especially on the first day. |

1689 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Managed a longer swim yesterday after work, just over 800m so I am ready for my sprint. I know I can still swim the distance. Unsurprisingly, I am not faster but not slower either, the usual 2:20 to 2:30 minutes per 100m in training. Can go 2:15 in a race, which is what I will count on when setting up my realistic time goal. |

Member 2860 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN A crazy day pursuing the all green week. I’m not 100% sure what’s going on, but my wife was really concerned about the two workouts I missed this week. So…I did them. Today was then a quadruple. Starting at 4:30 I did a 3:30 ride, with the first two hours inside and the last 90’ outside, after the sun came up. Then I went directly to the gym for an hour of strength training and straight into saturday masters—1800m. I had to come home and give a research presentation at an online international conference, and then back to the pool for a second session for the day. 2100yds (and yes, the pool was switched from 50m to 25yds while I was giving my talk). I’m pooped. Tomorrow we drive up (2 hours each way) for my niece’s graduation. No rest for the wicked, I suppose. |
