Subject: New Kind of Race
So one of the guys I swim with was on a group trail run last weekend. He said they all train for this certain kind of race. You just get a map and a compass. On the map are checkpoints you have to hit in order. Has anyone ever heard of this or know of any around here?

Its either orienteering or an adventure race. Orienteering is just as you described. You get a map and a compass and have to find designated check points. The first person/team to find them all wins. It would also be an adventure race which would include orienteering but would also have mountain biking, trail running, kayaking, etc. Genesis adventures holds a few adventure races but I don't know who does orienteering events.
