Subject: Hi All
I am also new to this board. I'm 34 years old and I have decided recently that I would love to do a triathalon. In fact, I'm doing one August 14 in Cicero, Indiana....only the swimming part though. My goal is to eventually do one all by myself. For the past year I have been trying to get my body back in shape by doing Body Sculpting and Spinning classes. I was a swimmer from age 7 all the way through college. In fact, I used to swim the mile in competitions. It kills me now when I get back in the water to think that I used to be in that good of shape.....but with getting married and having twins what do you expect. If anyone can recommend how I can train for a triathalon I would greatly appreciate it. Hope to hear from any of you.

My running is okay. I've never really been a runner because I was so busy swimming. Here's the thing....I don't really get tired when I run, I feel like I could go all day, but I get terrible cramps that make me have to walk. What is this from? I've heard it could be from holding my breath. Once I get that taken care of, my running should be a breeze.

Ron has several training plans on the home page - good luck with your training!  Maybe you could do one in the spring?

Anyway, welcome!

Hi Debbie,

The mix of running, biking and swimming make for a great all around fitness program.  I expect the conditioning will come back pretty quickly for you since you have done a lot of endurance training as a swimmer.

Is the cramp during running you mention in your legs or your side?  If it is a side stitch, concentrate on exhaling fully.  I used to work on this a lot to help get over side stitches.  If it is a leg cramp, it could be low electrolytes, particularly potassium.  They say eating bananas (high in potassium) is good for leg cramps.   You probably know all about nutrition for endurance training from your swimming days.   More likely, it could just be fatigue.   If you are tensing your legs while running, you may be causing some early fatigue that results in cramps.  Every muscle ought to be relaxed while you are running, except the ones that are pushing you forward.  Try to mix in some walking before the time when the cramps usually start so that you can build up the workout duration first.  Then work on running more and more until you can run continously for the duration of your workout.

Stay in this triathlon game.  You will get hooked pretty quickly on the people and on the way the training makes you feel.

Hi Debbie, getting started with a relay is a good way to get into the sport. The only other thing I might suggest is that you check to see if you are wearing the correct shoe for your foot type and that your shoes are not worn out. Anyway goodluck with your training
