Anybody else get that funky "sucking on a penny" taste in their mouth during/after a race or hard workout? More importantly, what causes it?

Did some googling and found mostly guesses that included polution particles, blood (iron) from burst capillaries, and some equine disease that humans might catch???? BTW, how do they know the horses taste metal.....??

According to an episode of Dr Quinn Medicine Woman, you could have mercury poisoning. Sorry I don't have any real answers, but I hope you find some.

blood tastes metallic.  I would guess you are coughing up a little blood.  I played soccer in Jr. High with a guy who had asthma.  About every 3rd game he would cough up blood.  Maybe you have minor athsma?

On tv last night, someone asked a Dr. about this and he replied, "Do you keep your mints in your change purse?"

Leaking spinal fluid?? I've heard that if you "taste" metal it could be that .... but I'm no doctor, nor do I play one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night .......

The poster above mentioned mercury poisoning somewhat humorously. I would second that on a bit more serious note. Fillings do age and wear out. If they begin to crack (assuming you even have any) it could be that in a hard run, if you are clenching or gritting your teeth while under exertion, you are grinding off bits of the filling and tasting the mercury and/or silver.

"Mad as a hatter" is all about ingesting mercury, although in the vapor form. Some Bay in Japan (can't remember the name) had high levels of mercury which ultimately led to tragic results for the local fish eating population. One of my projects in grad school for hydrogeology dealt with mercury in the environment from heap leach mining. Even in that kind of setting it was scary stuff.

just my .02.

Whoa -- I have asthma, and I've never coughed up blood -- that sounds like a whole different issue to me.
