Do it?

I tried it for about .25 mile. It was nice. My stride is completely different, more of a forefoot landing rather than a heel landing.

I looked at a couple of pictures of my stride, and I noticed that I land on my heel with a straight leg (maybe that's why my knees have so many problems?!) I'm going to try to correct that and land more on my forefoot wih a bent knee, akin to my barefoot stride. Is that similar to the chi/evolution position?

I want to ramp up my distances over time without sustaining more knee injuries. I would love any input.

I believe that a little bit of barefoot running can help increase lower leg strength and improve running form.  When I'm marathon training, I usually mix some barefoot intervals in with my speedwork sets.  It seems to help overall.  But you also have to be careful not to overdo it.  Start small (1/4 - 1/2 mile) and work your way up slowly.  If you aren't used to it, it can wreak havoc on your calves.

If he doesn't come around and answer, shoot Rowdy a PM. He loves to talk about barefoot running, and was instrumental in me taking my first barefoot run.
Myself, I did one little barefoot run earlier this week. I loved it. I put my shoes back on for tonghts romp around the neighborhood, but I could feel that my stride had changed for the better. I'm so glad I found barefoot running as a beginner, because I can already tell it is going to help me a lot. For meand my flat feet, motion control shoes just weren't cutting it. It took running barefoot to actually teach me how to run properly. The difference from just one run is amazing, so I am really looking forward to seeing what a difference it will make over time.

I've got no experience with this, but I saw some shoes Nike makes for this called Nike Free.  Supposedly it is supposed to simulate barefoot running while still giving you a little cushion.

On that note, I do love my Nike Free's. However, I must say that they still allow a heel, rather than forefoot landing. BUT, if you concentrate on the forefoot landing, the Free makes for a much more comfortable run when there are acorns and sticks across the pavement.

Here I am with my barefeet and all the knowledge I can pass. I would encourage you to run barefoot on the grass initially. It is more forgiving and you can go farther. It takes quite a bit of time to build up the sole of your foot to run barefoot on pavement.

I run barefoot on grass and have started to wear water shoes or my Vibram Five Fingers when running on pavement. I choose not to run barefoot on pavement. In the summer it is way to hot and in the winter it is way to cold.

If you would like some links so that you can further explore this let me know and I will send them to you.

I did some barefoot running a few months ago. 5-10 minutes as warmup, then I put my shoes back on and went for my runs. I noticed immediatly a difference in my stride, forefoot landing instead of flat foot.
Unfortunatly I hurt my foot on a stone (walking, not running) and had to stop the barefoor stuff. My foot is almost 100% recovered now, so I will soon start the barefoor running again for sure.

Wow, HELLLLOOO tight calves.

Today I focused on leaning forward from the ankles, landing on my forefoot instead of heels, and I did the last 1/4 mile barefoot to focus on my stride.

This is definitely going to take time to get used to. The pavement felt fine. I mainly wanted to go barefoot to compare my stride while I'm shoed.

My lower abs feel tighter too. I guess that's a good sign.

Me too, please, Rowdy, if you get a moment.  I'm such a tenderfoot, but the elementary school near me has a nice grassy field, I'm willing to give it a try.

My body mechanics are SO bad, I need all the chi form and any other benefits I can get!!

I was passed by two barefoot runners in last years Seattle Marathon.  I was amazed.

I will send the links to you guys in a little bit. I have to drop off my bike to get fenders installed and then cut my grass. I should be able to send them before going to work this afternoon.
