I'm looking for a training program and don't have the funds to pay for it.

Has anyone used the free program on this site? It looks good, but I would love some feedback for those that have used it.

PS. I know it's pretty general, but that works well for me since I get de-motivated by too many details.

I did not even know that BT had a free IM plan.  I am printing it up now and will review and comment latter.  I did IMCDA last year, feel free to look thru my training log if you want.  Also I posted my 2007 plan outline on 9/29 in my log.  My planned hours are probably overkill for what is needed to complete an IM.  Train safe, T.

I signed up and paid for a gold membership and used a BT 1/2 IM to IM bridge plan.  So far it's been geat.  I'd recommend using a gold plan off this site- you have to pay, but it's really nothing compared to the amount of information and support you receive on this site

I'm only a bronze member, but I get the Beginner Full IM plan, and it has been great so far... 1st IM on Nov. 4th, so that'll be the true test! I have upped the bike time (mostly just the long weekend ride--felt the plan was a little lax on that) and cut back a tad on the swimming (but that's because I'm a strong swimmer, and felt my time was better spent on the other two sports). I'd definitely recommend it.

I've always had a hard time sticking to an exact plan, I do like the one BT offers though. Last year I followed Gail Bernhart's 13 weeks to a 13 hour IRONMAN and I really liked it. Google it and a bunch of variations will come up! Now I pretty much do the same thing week to week, for better or for worse, but I have to be a creature of habit or I won't get it done! I am doing IM Az. so in November I will start the 20 week plan! I too tend to over do it on the mileage, but I usually stay pretty injury free (thanks to my wonderful chiropractor)!

I read thru the BT plan yesterday.  I like the swim workouts and will probably use many off them.  For me it seemed like the bike and run volume built up too fast, but it is a 20 week plan so there is not a lot of time.  The other downside is that it does not call for any weight lifting.  This would be ok if you were able to bike and run in the hills but since you are coming from Florida you might want to do a little lifting.

That's a great point. I had planned on lifting up until the 20 week program begins to give me some extra strength for the season. I hadn't really thought about using weights to help with hills.

You can also use bigger gears to build leg strength. I'm a big advocate of lifting, but I haven't seen many triathletes that keep strength training in perspective. They almost treat it as a 4th event, rather than just something done in small amounts to aid the 3 events.

Lots of ways to build leg strength.

it is an awesome book with tons of info and 3 different 30-week plans (just finish, intermediate, and competitive)

Like someone else mentioned, I like Gale Bernhardt's 13 week plans.  She has two...one is "13 weeks to a 13 hour Ironman", the other is "13 weeks to a SUB-13 hour Ironman", the second requiring a bit more of a time commitment to the training.

She first published the original 13 week plan in Triathlete Magazine (June 1999) and you can find it on their website here:

http://www.triathletemag.com/story.cfm?story_id=1533&pageID=1732

http://66.77.216.76/exec/triathlete/chart.cfm?publicationid=92

The sub 13 hour plan was also published in Triathlete magazine, but can't recall the excact edition right now.  I have it at home.  I can't find this one free on the net, but you can get it from her website for a fee:

http://www.trainingpeaks.com/gale/

Although I think a better idea is to just get her book, Training Plans for Multisport Athletes.  I see there is a new (2nd) edition which has just been released or is soon to be released.  And the 2nd edition includes the sub 13 hour plan, plus, of course, numerous other plans for all race distances.  Money well spent, IMO.

I believe this link is the 2nd edition of her book from Amazon:

Oh...and I understand being frugal and all, but, you're going to spend countless hundreds of dollars on registration, training, equipment, travel, nutrition, etc, etc, to complete in an IM.  Why is it so critical for you to find a free plan rather than shell out a mere $20 or so, if necessary, to get the right plan for you?  Just seems odd to me since it's all for naught if you don't get the training right.

I truly believe that if ths is your 1st IM and you are not trying to win the event, a paid program is not necessary. The trifuel link, along with a book such as "Going Long" by Joel Friel will be more than enough information to help you acheive your goal.

Thanks again guys. I'm not so concerned with being completely free. I can afford a few bucks for a book or whatnot. I just can't afford a trainer or coach. I figured there were enough plans out there for free that I could find one that works well and fits me. I might the try the $10 book and see what it looks like. I have anumber of other books, but they are usually too detailed and lack a recomended plan. If I get too detailed and over think things, it takes the fun out of it.

13 weeks ? I've seen a number of programs out there showing time frames that short. That seems like a hell of a jump on distances. I was thinking that 20 weeks would be cutting it short. any thoughts?

note: Yes, I will be training before hand to maintain a good base and I understand burnout is one of the issues with a longer program.

I think that G B's book also has a 26 week program as well if the 13 week programs seem a little daunting.

I don't know about the one on this site, but I've always heard good things about all the programs on here.

Like you say, a plan such as Gale's 13 week plans assume you're already a fairly experienced triathlete and have already been training.  I just look at these plans as a guideline to help me structure the final 13 weeks of my IM training, not the complete start to finish plan.

And, I think it's important to look at any canned training plan as a guideline, or reference.  You likely need to tweak the plan to make it work for you...to work around your life, your other races, your strengths and weaknesses.  I'll tend to shift the workouts around within the week, and tweak or sometimes eliminate some workouts.  For example, I think Gale's plans are too heavy in swimming, and a bit light in cycling.  You can tell she comes from a swimming background...30-35% of the total training time dedicated to swimming which will constitute just 10-15% of your race?  Doesn't make sense to me.  So, I tend to trim back the swims and give some extra time to the bike.

Read the REQUIREMENTS/PREREQUISITES for using Bernhardt's 13-week program. A person that could fulfill the requirements already has paces that would allow for a 13hour finish. (But, it's marketing genius)

People seem to gloss over that part. It's not intended to be for everyone.

Thanks for the link. I'm doing IM USA in July 2007. I think I will follow this plan. On question though. Is a two week taper enough coming off 15 plus hour weeks?

NO....For a true IM taper you should cut volume at least 3 and preferably 4 weeks out to ensure maximum assimilation of training and adequate rest of the muscles. Not to mention you need a little break before the race.
