for fear of becoming too adventurous and having a nice ride around the neighbor hood become a ride around the county, and the eventual breakdown of my trusty steed, i've promised myself that i must invest in an extra tube/pump/wrench or any other necesary supplies to take them along with me.

are all tire tubes created (reletively) equal? And how does everyone carry this stuff around with them? I've seen the little bags that hang behind the seat, and they seem the most sensable/aero...

I have a small bag that goes behind my seat. Inside I put a spair tube, some change, my multi tool, and my cell phone. There is even room for a Cliff bar or some other small things but I usually leave it out. My pump is fixed on the frame for now but I am debating on getting a CO2 pump. I think that is about all you need to handle most problems.
