Subject: Riding with new cyclists
I have some friends that are new to cycling. I want to ride their pace and help them get started. How do you get the most out of a ride that is a slower pace than you would normally maintain? I work in some single leg drills...any other ideas? Thanks in advance - CJ

Well, you could ride in a higher gear... although you would be mashing the pedals... it would be more work to go slower.

Or you could pick points where you might ride ahead and then circle back to ride with them.

You might also only ride with them when you need a recovery ride... or something along those lines.

I don't know... if they're really new (like, first couple of rides) I'd stick with them so it's more enjoyable for them. I know if I was just getting started and not 100% confident on the bike, I'd be pissed if my riding partner was constantly taking off on me.

Take it easy, ride their pace, give them pointers (but don't go overboard)... and if it's going to be really easy, schedule it for an off day, or just add more miles yourself at the beginning or end. Let them set the pace and maybe just practice spinning in a lower/easier gear.

As someone who is generally slow all around, I HATE feeling like I am holding my "skilled" friends back.  I will actually tend to push too hard when training with a better athlete, and I have even hurt myself.   I DO see the value from training with these people.  I get to see better techniques and equipment.  I dont, however want to be a burden on the ones who help me in this way. 

I suggest that during your rides you do take a little time for yourself.  Maybe do some sprint intervals or something.  If you let them see you making the most of your workout it wil teach them to do the same.  But be up front about your plans.  Let them know that you want to help them but also need to benefit from the time.  I think they will understand.

When I ride with My sister in law who is a cat 1 races She will pull the whole way and Spin.  I on the other hand will have a great work out keeping up with her and also have a nice view along the way ;-).  On long hills she will do them a few times while I do them once.   Yes she is an amazing rider and I have to work my a$$ of to keep up with her on her hard days and that is if she doesn't drop me......  She has helped me alot with climbing and keeping a high cadance.  I wouldn't be half as good as I am with out her help.

One workout that some of the more advanced guys do when we ride is that they'll do a 'fixed gear' workout.  Pick a gear, stay in it the entire time.  Pros do this workout occasionally (on purpose) too.  Builds power on the uphills, recover on the downhills.

Two caveats:  You should be a very fit cyclist to try this workout - it places quite a bit of stress on your legs.  There's THAT warning.  Also - it's a better workout if you have rolling hills...not as effective if it's flat, and not reasonable to attempt if it's too hilly.
