Staph infections are pretty common here in AZ - we tend to see more of the resistant strains called MRSA.

In general, they are treated with antibiotics. For the resistant strains, Bactrim DS, tetracycline or doxycycline work pretty well. Some lesions will resolve spontaneosly with incision and drainage.

A cream called Bactroban is also available that works well for staph and impetigo.

Some advocate using the bactroban nasal swabs as a lot of staph tends to colonate in the nose.

Other anecdotal treatment includes: antibacterial soaps, colloidal silver, decreasing the amount of simple carbs ingested. Warm compresses also are helpful and sitz baths if they are on the bottom.

If they are from cycling - make sure that the shorts come off immediately after your ride. Wash them frequently. Using lubes, etc may help prevent chaffing which may cause the skin to be more prone to infection.

Staph infections should be seen by a medical provider and rxs given if needed.
