With all of the damage reports out of Kona does it not seem highly unlikely that the 2006 10/22/06 Championships will be held. Didn't they change the date from 10/14/06 to 10/22/06 to accomodate a cruise ship. See www.ironmanlive.com.

The article says the earthquake epicenter was in Kona.

I sure hope WTC has a contingancy plan in place for this disaster.

Thank God no one was killed, the reports state.

I'm sure they have some type of contingency plan....What if.....

Now we know why they cost $$$.

I would like to see the parameters that have to be met to call for cancellation or postponement (screw up a lot of tapers and travel plans)......

Waiting on baited breath here. I can't imagine how they would pull it off. Reports are saying Royal Kona (the big white hotel at the swim start) has major damage and has been evacuated along with the hospital. Lots of people will be without rooms. Waiting to hear on our hotel. My flight leaves Wednesday...

I don't see how they could pull off the race in Kona with all the infrastructure damage.  The repairs would have to be made in less than a week!

One contingency could be to make IMFL the Championship Race for 2006.

I'm sure there is a contingency plan and that probably would involve just cancelling it for this year. I doubt they would move it to FL.

I doubt it gets cancelled, just calm down and wait until Ironman makes an announcement.

I too am quite sure that WTC has a contingancy plan. However, I hope they execute that plan ASAP, like post an interim annoucement on their web site, tonight or Monday. Other Ironman races (non M-Dot) I have raced that have been subject to natural disasters did not notify entrants until 24 hours prior to race day with a final decision. Equivacating in a matter like this is tantamount to canceling the race altogether.

Our prayers and thought go to all those involved in todays event! I could never imagine the true magnitude of an earthquake. The worst Wisconsin gts is Bitter cold and blizzards. Then, we all just stay inside.

heh.  It's not a disaster here by any stretch of the imagination.

The 10k I was running this morning went off 20 minutes late due to the quake but that was it.

As far as the roads go, I know people who rode today up by Hawi.  There's a bridge that has structural damage on the road there, and it was closed while crews were inspecting it.  My friends said they could see large cracks in the road surface on the bridge.  That's bad news, as a bridge isn't likely to be fixed in a week.  However, this was north of the 19/270 split in Kawaihae, so the road from Kona north to there is fine.  There's alternate routes that can be taken at that point if the bridge isn't repairable and 270 stays closed up to Hawi.

My condo had lamps fall of the tables and the TV took a header into the coffee table and crushed it, but that's about the extent of the damage.

It's a lot of sensationalism, really.  No reason at all that I can see to cancel the race.

Thx Chris! It never ceases to amaze me how many people still fully believe news show reports! (I guess that's why they do it)

Anyway, enjoy the taper and get ready for a fun day!

For all the Cali. people ..... they know 6.6 is a decent quake, but not that big of a deal ...... most things were up and running within the day.

My feelings??

IM championships are almost always held the same time each year, which would have been yesterday, but the moved it a week to accomodate the cruise ships.

So Madame Pele was pissed and was just letting the islands and the RD know that you shouldn't "f" with her ......

Good luck Coredump and tjfry!!!
