Finally... I did it! A 10 mile run with a buddy. It took 2 hours and 2 minutes and we talked the whole way through. I've done two 9 mile runs and they were a struggle. This time we did 1 mile run at conversational pace and 1 min walk... We were strict about it and it helped get me through the whole thing. At mile 8 I was feeling much better than any mile 8 run and the last two miles were tough but not a struggle.

My buddy is a PT and explained why LSDs are good - all this Mitochondria, oxygen, recovery the next day talk... I'm not sure I understand everything but will learn it as I want to learn as much about my body as possible.

The course was relatively flat, a little climb here and there but the best part - it was nice and cool. I had just purchased some winter clothing, a Brooks LSD jacket and some Brooks gloves. They didn't get me too hot and I wore them comfortably through the whole run. A little sprinkle here and there and very low water intake which is good for me.

I'm signing up for the LA Half Marathon for December 3 and am confident I can do it now - its just 3 more miles right?

Then, hopefully, if I can get to it - it'll be the LA Marathon in 2007, Olympic distance Tris and hopefully a HIM!

2007 is going to be huge!

That's awesome, nice work.

I actually did my first 10 mile run yesterday too (though I ran it solo) and feel pretty great the day after. My previous best was 8 miles.

Good job. I am up to a 9 mile run in preperation for the LA Half-Marathon.

Need to keep adding the one mile a week. I am thinking I should have a 14 mile in the bank before the 1/2 marathon.

It is 3 point ONE more miles. Amazing how long an extra point can feel

Good luck and see you there.

Cheers

I realize the POINT ONE and how hard. Has taken me from 45 seconds to a full minute of torture to get through POINT ONE!!!

Congrats!
What an accomplishment and you should go ahead and sign up for that 1/2 marathon.
Most of the rotten lucky b@$$% I have run 1/2 marathons with finished the race without running further than 7 miles so you are WAY ahead of the curve!
How exciting and thanks for sharing!

p.s. I ran 10 miles the other night to counter a caffeine withdrawl headache. Decided to give it up cold turkey! Aspirin etc can't touch that headache, but a good endorphin rush can! Have not had a headache since

Great job!  You're an inspiration to those of us still trying to break the 6 mile mark!

Way to go you are so close to the 13.1 that you can almost see the finish line.  I have my first 1/2 mary in 3 weeks and I just ran the furthest in my life this weekend 13.5 miles in 2 hr 14 min.  The last mile was the hardest.  wanted to stop but had to keep going.  Keep up the great work.

Right on, Glenn!  Y'know, by mentally (and physically of course) conquering the 10-mi distance, you've already made yourself fully capable of the 13.1-mi distance (you just don't know it yet).

Did my first half mary about two months ago.  The course, while USAT certified and 13.1 overall, had the miles horribly marked wrong at the end.  What should have been the last .1 miles took 2:30.  It was a nightmare come true.  Just a tip that if you get there early go to the finish and warm up by joggin it out and back so you know what to expect.

I remember my first 10mile run. I was so stoked. The next 3.1 came pretty simple after that. Once you get through that 10 mile mental barrier.

Great job.

That's what my buddy said - jumping from a 10K to the half mary is not so bad - especially after the 10 mile mind barrier. But going from the half mary to a marathon is really tough.

Congrats. That is a big milestone it only gets easier the longer you do it.
Just remember though don't add too many miles too fast. The only thing that comes fast in running are the injuries.

Awesome job. That's a great accomplishment. If you can do 10, you'll be able to do 13.1. You'll feel like a million bucks after finishing that.

Going from 13.1 to 26.2 is a big jump, but it's simply taking the time to do more of what you're already doing to build up the endurance and so your body can take that much pounding. Also, everything after 20 miles feels like a whole different kinda of race.
