Love to bike, not a bad swimmer but running--I've got the pain! My first real training for a "Tri" and giving myself plenty of time to mold this out of shape body back into shape. BUT--a very Big BUT--never really ran (am taking it slow--really) Been limiting myself to 2 miles during the first couple of weeks--but still feeling the pain! Contiue to stretch and walk around 10 miles everyday. But to put it mildly--running is a pain--what is the big secret to getting through this if you are not and never been a runner?

Welcome to BT!

I wasn't a runner when I started training for triathlons, either.  I used the Couch-to-5k training plan I found here to build endurance.  It starts with a mixture of running and walking and builds up the amount of running slowly each week.  Good luck with your training!

I remember those days and revisit that type of pain when it comes to weight training.  As was stated above - a run walk start and build up slowly.  Don't worry about speed till you are covering at least 5k comfortably.

Welcome to the reshaping the body club.  Have fun with it

Welcome to BT.  We always need more middle aged triathletes around here.  The most important thing needed for endurance training is patience.  It takes a while, months if not years, too build up a base.  Find a plan that works for your schedule and keep to it.  No one workout is going to get you to a magical place, it's following  a plan that gets results.  Good luck in your training.

Hi James,

Welcome.

Take it slow.  Listen to your body.  THere is a difference in muscle soreness, and when something doesn't feel right.

Invest in the best running shoes you can afford, get lots of rest to recover (it takes us longer than those younger runners...).

I fins that swimming, biking and some weight training (for the legs) helps too.

Good Luck.

Danny

Hi James, I am right there with you. Middle age or old (50), non runner for 35 yrs and started walk/jog about a month or 2 ago. Was never aware of my knees before, but now I feel them ALL the time. Could be the shoes, I just wear a pair of sketchers running shoes. Could be I don't know how to run since I am not using the "Pretty', "Pose" or "Chi" methods and am just plodding along. Good luck and welcome to BT

Welcome to BT. As was suggested, try one of the beginner running plans such as the couch to 5K and see how that goes. It will take time. Doing a run/walk combo will also help you a lot. Be sure to log all of your training so that you can look back later and see how much you have improved! Happy tri'ing!
