Simply put as the subject says, swim caps over the ears or just above the ears? Opinions?

I can only do slightly above. I hate having my cap over my ears.

I like mine over my ears. For some reason though I always end up with water in my left ear.

Another question: Goggle strap under cap or over cap?

My swim cap is fabric, not latex, so it won't keep the water out of my ears. I have to wear it above my ears because it would annoy me otherwise.

The goggle strap goes on the outside of my cap so I can take them off if I need to get the water out of them.

Like Karen (madkat), I have a fabric swim cap (like swim suit material) and when I wear it, it is above my ears.

My latex or silicon ones go slightly over my ears.

I too wear my goggles over, in case of a need to adjust or dump out water or clear fog. I notice that the swimmers during the time trials wear them under. I just don't think it's affecting my time that much (o: for me to worry about increase or decrease in drag!!

(slightly) Related question: In races that furnish caps (i.e., each wave has a different color-coded cap), do you have to wear them? I shave my head and really have no use for a cap.

I guess it depends on the race, but everyone that I've been in it's been a requirement. It typically designates your wave. And if not, it just identifies you as being a registered part of the race.

I train with my goggles over my swim cap. But some say that during a race you should wear it under your cap so that they'll be less likely to fall/be kicked off. I'll probably do this in my open water swim tomorrow...you never know!!

I think the colored caps are also for added safety as they are easier to see in the water. (I think most people prefer the black cap.)

Well, I started with mine over my ears and found that things sounded really funny with the water trapped in there. It became, a few times, an equilibrium problem on my flip turns. But at the same time I really felt like I was going faster without my dumbo ears hanging out.

For the last 3 months I’ve tried it just above my ears and it feels a lot better, although I never even considered putting the goggles under the swim cap. Interesting idea, thanks!!!

I wear ear plugs so I wear my cap over my ears. I also wear my goggles under my cap because I have been elbowed and kicked more than once. I don't know if the cap kept my goggles on my head. I would hate to find out and have to swim without them.

Well, I'm going to be the oddball here. I wear my cap over my ears just so I don't have to wear earplugs. Keeps the water out of my ears just fine. I only wear a cap during races though and I don't want to have to mess with getting earplugs out during T1. I do like the thought of putting the goggle strap under the cap so they don't get knocked off. Next race I'll give it a try.

Swim cap over ears. Goggles over cap. Doing an open water swim today. Gonna try goggle strap under cap.

I wear my swim cap slightly above my ears and my goggles over my cap. I'm not particularly tied to this strategy, but it's my habit.

Cap just over the ears, goggle straps on the outside of the cap. Also, I pull the front edge of the cap down so it's just over the top edge of my goggles. Never lost my goggles when I did that, plus I can use the extra hydrodynamics.

I wear my cap covering my ears and in open water races have the goggles under the cap. It not only helps with keeping the goggles from getting kicked off, but if for some reason the cap should slip, it will just slide off and won't disturb the goggles.Sharon
