No, cool science is not an oxymoron.

I watched a NOVA program (Magnetic Storm) last night. It was about the Earth's changing magnetic field. Scientists believe that the Earth will be switching the direction of the magnetic flow from north-to-south to south-to-north. Compasses will point south instead of north. Hijinks will ensue. They don't know when it will happen but they believe it is in the process of happening.

Very cool.

They usually repeat the program. Check your local listings.

:D That is some sick chit, Autumn. Very funny, very sick. I've been looking for it locally here. I think I'll have to order it online, too. My aussie ex-bf introduced me to it and he kept the DVD's when we split.

I saw that too, navigation would be a nightmare, wonder how they would compensate? Cool side effect would be the Northern Lights visible form pretty much all latitudes.

I've studied under a physicist who researched pole reversal back in the 70's. It's going to happen but you, me, and pretty much everyone else around now will be dead by the time it occurs.

I've read that this polarity switch has happened before, and perhaps several times.  I guess over the course of several billion years, anything is possible.

I think it actually resulted in the invention in the 1870's of the Tate compass, by an Australian gentleman named Harvey Tate.  He found that by some peculiarity his new compass always pointed to magnetic South...giving rise to the common expression, "He who has a Tate's is lost."

I watched the show last night and thought it was very informative. Scary, but informative.
