Hello all. I am a 47 year old guy who recently had a complete rupture of my patella tendon--playing rugby. Needless, I have been encouraged by all (particularly my wife, who views the rugby injury as "self-inflicted") to seek a new sport. My doctor encouraged me to try Triathlon training as I have to swim and bike for rehab anyway (no running allowed yet). Anyway, I think he is crazy, but I thought I would give it a try. I am 6'1" and weigh about 251, sort of a fat/muscular guy. Not exactly ideal for triathlons. But hopefully, I can lose some weight before I am cleared to run. I have trained hard in the recent past for rugby (more anaerobic in nature, sprint intervals, jump rope, closed chain Olympic lifting), so I am not afraid of hard work, but would love any tips for beginners who are old and umm...well, fat. Sort of.

There are many of us on this site that "could stand to loose a few", myself included. Just take it slow and remember to change your diet with your training. The weight will come off. It took awhile to gain, it'll take awhile to loose, plus you will be gaining some muscle back. Good luck with rehabing that knee. You'll be completing your first tri before you know it. Welcome

Welcome!  Yikes, patellar rupture?  Tri training is great fun!  Hang in there with your recovery.

motivation for the larger set:

Here's part of a conversation I had last weekend with a 230 pound <6 ft tall guy who has done *4* Ironman tris!!

I said, "You can run a marathon at 230 pounds?"
He replied, "I didn't say I enjoyed it, but I can do it."

He knows his limitations, trains right, and loves his beer!
btw, he stopped over at our soccer booster Brat Stand after his trainig loop and got himself a cople of wonderful Wisconsin brats for a post-ride treat. OY!
