Hi there. I just wanted to let people know I'm out there in sunny?!?!? Scotland.

I am a 5 ft9 266lb Heavyweight so any encouragement, advice and slaps on the back will be most welcome as you pass me.

I have had a dream to do the Ironman at Kona for a long time and this is my first step after a long long time at achieving this goal or something similar. (I realised after dreaming the goal that qualification would be needed to get to Kona so just to one day do an Ironman would be really cool).

I realise that this is a long long journey I am setting out on so anyone in a similar position who wants an online buddy (M or F) for some support please drop me a note.

Thanks people and Mahalo

Mahalo..... from Scotland???

Welcome, I started the journey at 275#, I have been holding onto 235# for a couple years now.  I too dream of Kona, but I know that an Ironman in 08 is my current goal.

My only advice is train smart (follow the 10% rule), be patient, and log your workouts.  That way, when I am slogging through 9 minute miles an wondering why I can't run faster, I can look at your beginning logs and see I started out at 14 minute miles.  Puts things in perspective.

Oh, and have fun.

Chris

Welcome!  Small but consistent progress will see you to your goals.  Not sure how much weight you have to lose but perhaps the 'Beginner Exerciser' program would be a good start as it works on the bike and swim first (low impact) before bringing the run in.

Of course Michael Pates program is pretty good too.

Let us know if any questions.

Aloha!  I've got the think you have some connection to Hawaii already.

Another great feature about this site is the training logs.  Use it to track your workouts and you will see your progress over time.  Also, your new buddies can drop in on you there and give you encouragement.

Enjoy the sport, and welcome to BT!

Thanks for your kind words. I have decided to to the Mike Pates programme to start with so we will see how it goes. I think 14 min miles will be streaking along for me just now but time will heal that I hope LOL.

I also find I have entered the Disney Half so I will attempt to walk and jog and see if I can beat the bus.

Wow, what a way to start!!!

It's all about consistency.  If you can stick to your training plan consistently, I think you'll be amazed at what you'll accomplish.

Oh, and could you type w/ a Scottish accent?  I think it would give us a real international feel here at BT?

Welcome. Like everybody says be smart about your training, don’t do to much at once. But what I have found even more important, you need to get use to working out, it will probably take a couple of weeks, but once there you will have overcome a big hurdle. Then it will be no more sitting on the couch wondering if you should workout, you just do it

And you are closer to Kona then most of us here ! You already speak the local language

Aloha and many thanks for your kind words TriForrestTri. I cannot tell you how much the odd pat on the back is appreciated from all of you. I need the encouragement.

I will aspire to be consistant as you advice but on old highlander once told me that the race is won not by the swift but the determined. Maybe a mixture of both would be cool.

I am actually already surprised by what I have accomplished! (Can you use accomplish after only one week?). I'm not as much of a three legged elephant in the water as I thought with the advice I got in the forum. Just a three and a half legged one. In fact all aspects are much better than previously expected. It looks like multi discipline will be good for one as heavy as me, cut down on the injuries I expect.

Scottish accent is a little more difficult I'm afraid. If I talked auld scots ya widna unerstan a word I said. So I will talk posh Scots and just throw in the odd wee word.

Good luck, and don't quit !! If you get frustrated in one sport, you have the luxury of being able to do the other two and still improve yourself !

I've only been with this tri monkey biz since July and I love the people and the competition; it's like nothing else 've encountered in sport.

Aloooooohaaaaa!  I started my own journey toward the goal of an IM distance almost a year ago.  It is a long road, but the view points I've stopped at along the way to my ultimate goal have made it one of the most rewarding things I have undertaken.  This site does it all - excellent resources and good people to encourage you to reach your goals and stay motivated.

If you haven't run much before, go slow and read up on it.  A lot of us found out the hard way that its easy to bite off too much, too soon.  Going slow takes patience but in the end, its more rewarding when you start knocking out some longer distances rather than being sidelined to the couch nursing an injury.

Aloha Paul, Be consistent and realize that you have a long journey ahead but you've decided to start and that's the hardest step. Check out the weight loss section and feel free to join team for the weight loss challenge. Daily check ins in with help keep the motivation level up. I'm currently 234pds down form a high of 252 so I know how you feel. You will get lots of support here. Welcome!!
Oh and you wouldn't be near Paisley would you? I've got second cousins over there.
Good luck with the training. Chris

Aloha and Thanks Z-dog. This side of the pond it seems a little intimidating but I never let that put me off anything. I will try to bring a more laid back attitude where I go.

Aloha erlifeguard

Thanks for the encouragement. You are an inspiration and I have booked into the tri-ing for weight loss forum. Hopefully signed up for a team. I think you are right that the encouragement will be much need and appreciated.

Unfortunately not near Paisley, I come from the civillised side of Scotland!!!! (Just joking - honest)
My family originates from there but 2 generations back.
