Well now my interest is piqued.  WTF is a "number modification" and what did you do??

If memory serves me right, he got a two-minute penalty for trimming the number so it fit in his frame, and upon learning of the penalty, got a 10-minute penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.  I can't confirm this, but rumor has it that he strolled casually up to the head official and said 'You want race number modification?  I'LL show you race number modification!!!", then proceeded to turn his race number into a hat, a broach, and a pterodactyl.

Wait.  Maybe that isn't what happened.  Scratch all that.  Carry on.

Number modification also depends on the RD---there's a local one here who if you modify in any way, regardless if the complete number is still visible, you will get a penalty

A lot of people trim or fold their number so it fits on the seat tube

The "number modification", that one is in dispute. The head ref at the race won't change it ( and he nailed about 1/5th of the total field for the same call ). Contacted Charlie Crawford ( USAT Head Official ) and got a response from Charlie that the official was wrong and I shouldn't have received the penalty. That issue is still being investigated according to Charlie.

I put the number vertically on my seatpost instead of the top tube.  To do that, I trimmed the edge of the cardboard tag ( removed about 1/2 inch of paper ) so that it fit into the space.  I don't like having it on the top tube, as I end up with it fluttering about and getting in the way of my knees.

This was the answer I got back from Charlie ( who was pretty nice to respond, and did so fairly promptly I should add ):

I am very surprised at the penalties given at that event and am doing an investigation.  I will contact you a few days to let you know what I find.  With exception of altering a number to the point of not being able to read it, I have never heard of giving a penalty for trimming.  I write the standards and policy manual for USAT officials and this is certainly not in there.

So even though it still shows in the official results, I don't count it as a valid penalty.

That is inconsistent with the official USAT interpretation of the rule.  Straight from Charlie Crawford, trimming is okay, as long as you do not affect the visibility of the actual numbers.

Yeah, I know--some of his "rules" are a little over the top

maybe they inputted it wrong but the craziest penalty on the books I ever saw 12 hour plenty. actually looking at there times there 10k time was ranked 1 and 2 and would be awesome 5k times. Still you would think they would get DQed and not a 12 hour penalty.

Man that would really pizz me off if it kept me off the podium with a BS penalty like that.

I've always trimmed my number and I've never heard it was not ok to do so.

Thanks for posting this. I am a newbie about to enter my first race. I had no clue about penalties.

Here's an article from Slowtwitch. It poses an interesting question, if an athlete had a choice between paying a fine or taking a time penalty, which would they choose? I'm not a pro and don't see a podium in my near future, so I'd probably take the penalty?? the article also talks about a pro getting penalized for throwing his water bottle to the side of the road because his cage was loose, which falls under the 'Abandonment Rule', and went from 10th to 13th place because of the penalty. Overall I think the article makes a good argument about the enforcement/fairness of some the penalties athletes receive.
