Subject: Newbie wheel question
What's the practical difference between a 650 wheels and 700's? I'm just getting into all of this and have come across a great deal on a used tri bike with 650 wheels. It seems most of the newer, high-end bikes use 700's. Why is that?

700 wheels will give you more top-end speed by quite a bit. A little quicker acceleration with the 650 wheels.

I agree.  Though I often wonder what the trade off is.  Reduction of rotating weight is important.  Would the smaller wheels be faster over the average, because you are reducing the diameter?  Think of it this way.  You have a 2 lb. weight on a 1 foot long rope.  You swing it in a circle, like a windmill.  Now keep the weight the same, but increase the rope length to 2 feet.  It's a lot harder to swing (accelerate) but the speed of the weight at the end of the rope is faster for the same number of RPMs.  I should have paid more attention in physics class 40 years ago!

i read somewhere recently that 700s may actually be more aero than 650s.
