Subject: Tips for a new comer?
I am relatively new to triathlon training, and have not had the guts to enter an event yet. The main reason I started the training is because I enjoyed the variety, and it is cost efficient (only have to pay to swim) and you dont have to be stuck inside a gym all the time. I am also desperate to lose weight!
I have a couple of questions for some more experienced athletes, and particularly those who started in a similar position to me. I am 25 years old, slightly under 6ft tall. This time last year I weighed 13 stone (which I consider to be my "natural" weight), now I weigh 15 stone. I am desperate to get back down to my old weight. What kind of effect would losing 2 stone have on my swim time and run time? I currently swim 1500m in 26mins, and run 10k in around 45mins.
What is the best way to lose this weight? I currently run (about 7k), swim (1500m), and cycle (20-30k) twice each per week.
Also, how can I replicate road riding on a excercise bike (since I have one of these but cant afford to buy a road bike at the moment)?

Welcome to BT!  Enter an event!  That will be great motivation.

How many times a week are you working out?  Looks like you can do great distances in even better times!  Maybe keep a food log too to see how many calories you are taking in.

And check out the forum called Tri'ing for weight loss - it's certainly motivational

I don't know how much a stone is insofar as weight is concerned, but you are about 15% over your so-called "natural weight"; that is nothing to be alarmed about. Your training times seem to indicate that you are in fairly good condition. As far as I'm concerned you are ready to do an olympic triathlon quite successfully. Go to at the home page on this site and take a look at the olympic training program.

Welcome Chris. The weight will start to come off the more you train. Be careful not to diet, as your body will need good nutrition and good carbs to be fueled properly for the workouts. Since adding more distance (time) to my swim, bike and run workouts I have seen more weight loss. Be careful not to go more than 10% of your regular workout. The extra loss will definately help in all three events in the long run. Don't worry so much about the weight, as it will come off. Concentrate more on your nutrition and your workouts and you will see results.

Train smart and have fun. Ask lots of questions, there are plenty of helpful, experienced tri enthusiasts here to help!!
