Subject: Hello! I guess this makes it official...
I'm ready to begin turning what has become a dream into a reality. At some point this summer, without me realizing it, my heart and brain got together and decided that I was going to become a triathlete.

A little about me:
37 y.o.
6'2"
183 lbs (fluctuates up & down 3 lbs or so)
married w/2 daughters (6 and 3)
ex-collegiate baseball player (pitcher)

swim capably, but nothing even close to competitive yet. Basically starting from zero.
biking capably, but again starting from zero essentially. Old Soma extra-tall 10 speed. Gotta get a new one.
running - now this I've been doing! see below...

I've kept in respectable but not great shape up until this year, when a coworker asked me to join him in running our employer's 5k in May (my first ever). I trained a bit, not real well, and raced in what I now view as a pretty poor 24:55. I have since been running with my alma mater's high school cross-country team and have made some pretty significant improvements. I'm learning all the time, and I look forward to testing my 5k ability again later this month or next. Really hoping for something in the 22s or lower.

Anyway, that's my background. I feel extremely excited and, well, rejuvenated, to have this personal challenge lying before me. After a cursory look at this site it appears to be what I was looking for...a place to learn and a community to share experiences with. I've got a workout journal at another site that I may be able to ship over to here, we'll see. I look forward to interacting with everyone out here.

Hi!

Just having the goal feels great, doesn't it? When do you plan on doing your first tri?

Dave,

I wish you well. I'm 2 months into my adventure with my first official event in 3 weeks. This site has been one of the best resources for me. I hope it is for you, too.

Thanks so much for the warm welcomes, Kimberly, Dana, and Motivated! You guys get right to the point, don't you ? Actually, I have no specific date/event targeted yet :-( . I am concerned with getting into biking and swimming shape. Perhaps I'm selling myself short a bit, but I have minimal confidence in either of those disciplines at the moment. I am hoping to learn from this site (and you kind folks of course) what training regimens I should begin to follow and what benchmarks conditioning-wise I should be achieving before lining up an event. I want to be properly prepared, cause I'm not into quitting mid-race! Also, as I'm sure is the case with many of you, I am working around a family schedule and want to make sure I'm doing my fair share when it comes to household responsibilities. My wife is understanding, although she thinks I'm crazy...but that's nothing new.

Thanks for the welcome each and every one of you. I'm excited that this is a dynamic community that I can clearly benefit from. And thanks about those running times Ron and Whizzer. Just trying to keep up with the cross-country kids is a huge (but fun) challenge for me, being some 20 years their senior . What a great group of kids.

Hi Edge,
Your situation sounds very close to mine, minus the collegiate sports. The BT community is far and away the best resource I've found to get started with the tri obsession. I waited about a month after seriously starting training to choose a race, but when I did I registered for it right away. This gave me a specific goal and motivator. There was no way I was going to tell my wife I spent money to register for a race I didn't run!

Good luck and welcome.

Thanks Marmadaddy! I'm still trying to figure out this site a bit...there is so much to explore! I guess starting a training log is a good idea...I've got one at another site, but nothing like the log template here - yowza! Also trying to figure out where members spend the most time just chatting about tri stuff. Looks like the Tri Talk thread if I'm not mistaken.
