Subject: Stolen Bike!
So I just recently got my first road bike. I live in a collage town... and next thing I know, somebody else has a brand new bike! I can't believe people other people can actually go around stealing other peoples belongings. Hopefully whoever stole my bike needed it for some life or death situation, and just happened to have a pair of wire cutters handy. (some how i doubt it though!)

i'm so sorry. that totally sucks. i built up an old mtb a few years ago and i guess the paint job was too nice, because it was stolen too. also on a college campus. its an awful feeling. i hope it is recovered, or that your home owners or renters insurance gets you something nice.

I'm sorry your bike was stolen. Campuses are the worst place for bikes. Definitely never store your bike on a rack for more than a few minutes, because the people who steal from college racks know what they're doing and all they need is time.

So sorry! Man that's like the worse crime against nature. Whoever did that should be castrated with the very same wire cutters.

Lesson to be learned: never leave your baby out of your sight.

I remember a college roommate many years ago applying the most amateurish black spray paint job possible to his brand-new (Peugeot I think) bike.  It was a shame to do it, but it was effective.  His bike was not stolen from the campus of a downtown college.

I had a couple of friends wrap their entire bike in electrical tape. It had the same effect as the sloppy paint job deterrent, and it was correctable with a bit of solvent. Their bikes were never stolen.

Sorry about your loss meghan. :-(

Uggg! Do you have renter's insurance? If so, it's probably covered. Even so, it sucks!

I hear of folks in San Francisco who have had their brand new tri bikes stolen out of their garages, and it just plain sucks!

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. :-(

It just seems wrong. Well, I guess you could file a police report -- they may turn up something.

Again, so sorry!

You may have already done this but check with your local police department. Believe it or not I used to be a police officer and had my bike stolen from the front yard, while I was inside. A few days later I checked our bike pen (place we kept found bikes) and it was there. May be worth a shot.

Thanks guys for all your comments and suggestions. I have talked to the police department but they said it's not very likely that bikes turn up. And, the next bike I get is coming in the house with me every time I'm not outside!! thanks again
