I know, I know…sounds like a pretty ridiculous question for this board. I will someday get to the point where I ask everyone some thought provoking training questions.

My first triathlon will be in Spring ’07. I have yet to get to a pool, but I will! Still don’t know if the local Y has something other than full memberships (I just want to use the pool). I will also check the local school. At any rate…I digress. When I do start swimming, and especially when I race, I read that a good set of goggles is extremely important. However, I wear contacts and I was wondering if anyone else does and what their experience is with the swim, the selection of goggles, etc…

Thanks!

Paul

I wear contacts, and have done so since about age 13. I used to scuba dive fairly often, and have been in a pool with goggles (despite my lack of recorded swims).

I've never had a problem with it. I'm pretty blind without, so it would be extremely difficult without some form of corrective lenses. So long as the goggles fit, and keep most of the water out, you shouldn't have too much problem with it.

I wear contacts and swim and race in them. It's really not a problem as long as your goggles fit well. And even if they start to leak, just roll over on your back or pop your head up, and adjust them.

Ditto on the others - no problems with good goggles.

I am not really concerned with it because my vision is not really bad without my contacts, -1.00 in 1 and -0.75 in the other, but for the record I have never had my contacts come out on a swim. It will help in an open water swim in a tri if you put your goggle strap under your swim cap so that if you get kicked in the face, hopefully your goggles won't come off. Good luck training!

Another option and the one I use (because contacts dry my eyes out because I'm on the course so long) is I swim with speedo optical goggles. They msrp around $20. They aren't exact but close enough.

And then I wear a pair of subscription sunglasses for the bike and run.

Get a good set of goggles and you shouldn't have any problems during the swim. It took me 4 tries to find some that fit my face well, but even with leaking goggles its not like the water is going to come rushing in all at once.

My only issue is drying out after several hours on the bike.

I wear contacts also and have not lost one swimming yet. However I have thought about maybe taking an old pair of glasses with me and just put them in the transistion area just in case I did lose a contact in the swim. That way at least I could see to finish the race.

I only wear contacts when racing but have yet to have a problem (I'll need to have two pairs of glasses in transition because of that statement ).

I've had my goggles kicked off and still didn't have any trouble - your natural reaction is going to be to close your eyes if this happens anyway so it's pretty unlikely that you will lose a lens. I do always keep a pair of glasses in transition just in case but unless I happened to lose both I probably wouldn't bother wearing them anyway.

I wear contacts too and had never had a problem racing with them. I once had some goggles that were not a good fit, and I would occasional get a bit of water in one eye, the contacts always stayed in, but it could take a bit before I got rid of the blurred vision I got.

I wear contacts all the time and have had good luck with the AquaSphere goggles.

Something I had planned to do for races this year but never got around to... complete the swims with a spare pair of goggles in case they broke/got knocked off, because I have really bad vision and couldn't race without contacts. I may still do this for HIM distance or crowded swims next year. And I always carry an extra lens in my race day bag just in case.

Ditto to what everyone else has said.  Just a side note though, if you're gonna race in them, then I suggest you train in them.  I only wear mine for training/racing since I'm simply too lazy to put them in the rest of the time.  But the saying of "nothing new on race day" applies to contact usage as well.  Good luck with your training and your first tri!!

Wow, I could never manage to get in a new contact during a race. I put my glasses in my bag in case I lose one during the swim, but I have never had any issues. More of an issue drying out on the biek, but a good fitting pair of sunglasses helps with that too.
