We give much time and money to SELF - Suppoting and Encouraging Low Income Families.  It is mainly helping people to find jobs to stay off of welfare and buying Chrstmas presents for the families so the kids can get some.  This way the families do not have to go onto wlefare and they still have a good Christmas.

Heifer Int'l is awesome. They give livestock (and other stuff) to people in developing countries and train them how to make a living with it. The stipulation to the people is that they have to give away some of the offspring to others in their community.

Plus, you can give people "Chickens" or "A Goat", which is a fun way to make the money you've donated in their name mean something more than just $50...

My favorite charity is the Tariq Khamisa Foundation. It was founded by a very dear friend of mine, Azim Khamisa, after his teenage son was shot dead while delivering a pizza in Chula Vista (south of San Diego) to earn money for college.

Azim started a foundation against youth violence and teamed up with the grandfather of the 14 year old who shot his son. Together they go to schools around the country and present their program - urging kids to resist gang membership and violence. They're making a real difference - especially showing kids what true forgiveness is all about.

The website is -

And you all could also donate blood

that is really interesting idea and I might go and add it to xmas list thread.   I cannot donate right now due to malaria, but would love it if one of my family memebers would donate in my name for christmas!   Thank you for the idea!

I would go with Habitat for Humanity.  Not that I know alot about it, but my friend Annie, a professional volunteer, says it is an amazing organization whose efforts empower people (especially women) to pull themselves up and contribute back.

Don't forget your local service clubs: Rotary, Moose Lodge, etc.

I am a member of our local Kinsmen Club in Sarnia.
My time and money are donated through them.
Any money donated to us stays in our community and we do a lot for our community.

And if that fails then I too have a bike replacement fund that gladly accepts donations!

See, I knew you would come up with ones I wouldn't think of immediately! With my side of the family, we are all going together and making a donation to Habitat for Humanity. Dad felt really strongly about that this year and wants it earmarked specifically for continuing Katrina relief.

My family is familiar with Heifer Int'l too, but I was looking for other ideas because my husbands step mother is IMPOSSIBLE to shop for. The only thing she does is teach (which,I question if she should still be doing), she has every opposite view on life that we have and she has never had a nice word to say to me. She doesn't appreaciate any gift we give her, so this would be a better way to use my money, IMO. I'm sure that whatever organization we pick for her, would be the wrong one.

Thanks for all the awesome ideas!

I'd suggest taking a look at www.guidestar.org where you can find financials on any registered 501(c)3 in the US. It's good to know that you're giving to an organization that is fiscally responsible - not all of them are. It's really eye-opening to see how many of them spend exhorbitent amounts on overhead and salaries and not the actual cause.

Personally, I give to American Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, my local Humane Society, St. Jude Children's Hospital and local nonprofits serving kids with disabilities.

Also the web site www.justgive.org lets you register for charities you'd like other people to give money to in your name. One of my friends and his (now) wife registered 100% of their wedding registry on this site, they didn't want gifts. How cool is that?

Well in that case, why don't you pick one you love that you know she'll especially hate, that way you can do something worthwhile and still get a good dig in!  Now THERE's the holiday spirit in action!

JK of course.

I like Raising a Reader and that could be good for a teacher, too.

Also, ACCION (accion.org) which is a microlender.

Make A Wish Foundation

That has my vote. I have a soft spot for a child with no future. Sometimes for a period of time I will only eat 6 days a week and donate at least what I save in food for that one day a week.

I have a new one... HEAL Africa. In addition to other things, they help to repair fistulas in women who were victims of truly unspeakable violence in places like Congo. I read an article about this today and it was the most disturbing and saddest thing I've ever read. On MSNBC if you want to read it...

That's what I'd like to do for my wedding. I'd still register for things that we'd need, but for people who aren't super close to us or don't have a lot of $$, I'd like to see that $20 go to charity.

My favorite is the Achilles Track Club, as well as Soldier's Ride.

They take donations so you can sponsor a challenge athlete for the marathon or any endurance event as well purchasing handcrank bikes for athletes.  Soldier's Ride is geared towards the soldiers that return from overseas with injuries giving them the goal to run an endurance event.
