Subject: Olympic two weeks before first HIM?

I plan on doing my first Half Iron-distance this year.  In looking at nearby races, I came up with an olympic distance tri (Lifetime Fitness Tri in MN; 14 July) two weeks before the Chisago Lakes Half Iron-distance (29 July).  Are those two races too close?

The half would be my "A" race and I'd probably be treating the Oly as a long workout/brick.

What if I did an Oly one week before the Half?  The Spirit of Racine (22 July) half has been talked about by a few members of this board, and it'd be alot of fun to meet some other BTers at the race instead of cruising by myself at Chisago lakes.

I realize that this is 8 months away and alot could happen between now and then, but I thought I'd get some opinions anyway.

Should be fine on either account.  You should be in top shape 1-2 weeks out and esp. if you are looking at it as a training day.  No problem.

I just read an article in Runner's World that would say that it's a good thing to compete in a race that's half the distance of your "A" race...and to race it at full speed.  You can read it here.  It seemed to work for Deena Kastor.  The only difference in what she did and what you are talking about is that she allowed three weeks between races and you're looking at only two.  Recovery may be an issue.

Have  you seen the registration cost for Lifetime?  It would be a very expensive "workout" if you weren't going to "race" it.  Good luck.

That's exactly what I said when I checked out the race last year.  That is one race I already know I will NEVER do, based on price alone.  No Olympic can be worth that much - unless  you're a pro in the running for the prize money.  My 2 cents.

As an alternative check out the Heart of Lakes Tri in Annandale, MN which I believe is the same weekend  http://www.holtri.org/  .  Registration opens March 1.  Fee is about one-half the price.
