Subject: Indoor Trainer Time vs. Road Time
I did a search regarding this issue, but didn't find exactly what I was looking for.

How does time spent on a trainer compare with time spent on the road?? I've heard that an hour on the trainer would be the equivalent to MORE than an hour on the road.

Is this true? I've just completed my first indoor workout, and would like some guidance for the long Winter ahead.

Some will say that an hour on the trainer is worth two on the road.  Other people will say that those people are full of crap.  A lot of it is going to depend on how hard you work on the trainer vs how hard you would be working on the road.  When outside, you have time to coast and stop pedaling... you'll also have hills where you need to work harder.  There might be stop signs and red lights and cars....    on the trainer you don't have any of that.  If you stop pedaling, well, your workout "stops."

I will leave you with this:  Time on the trainer is better than no time at all.

45 minutes on the trainer is worth 1 hour on the road is the generally accepted average,

I heard the same 45min to 1 hour ratio. But it does depend upon how hard you work during that 45 mins. I have been using the clubs spin room by myself for 3 weeks 1-2 times each week. I just take Spin principles and try to simulate hills as much as possible. I have also been outside in the cold for a few rides to maintain the balance as much as I can. I have noticed an increase in power and endurance. But have not pushed fully, too cold to try to overdo it. We shall see when the spring comes

Maybe as far as calories burned that ratio works.  But for real riding (and race) experience, no way.  If you could get an hour's worth of riding done in 45 minutes all the pros would spend all day on the trainer.   There are too many variables missing from the trainer rides to ever call them equal.   Even if it were true I would almost rather spend 2 hours on the bike outside than 45 minutes on the trainer!  Boooooring....

As far as workouts I would just count them as the same time.  If your workout plan calls for an hour of riding, ride an hour either inside or outside.

i try to not compare the two.  They are completely different.  Trainer rides let you focus on specific power levels.  Pushing a certain cadence in a certain gear will result in a certain power 100% of the time.  This is usefull in training for specific intervals.  However riding on the road, you get differences in resistance (road surface, wind speed, terrain, ect) making it almost impossible to target a constant power level.  Since the two are completely different, you might as well get the most out of the differenes and target your workouts accordingly.
