Subject: Perceived Effort Rankings: Tri's and Running Races

I was reading over at ST some comments IM competitors that they found running a stand-alone "all out" Marathon was "tougher" than "pacing" an Ironman race.

This got me curious.   I know there are SO many variables, but just for conversation's sake, how do you veteran Tri and Running Race competitors rank (from easiest to most difficult) on the Perceived Effort the following races:

10K

Half-Marathon

Marathon

Sprint Tri

Oly Tri

70.3 Tri

140.6 Tri

I can only compare the two races I've done which were a 1/2 marathon and a sprint tri. The 1/2 marathon seemed way easier even though it was a good hour longer.

To put in perspective, I've only done one IM (11:32, sick w/cold), two 70.3 tris (4:46 PR w/GI trouble), a handful of Olympics (2:07 PR), zero sprints, 10 marathons (2:51 PR), one half marathon (1:21), and a gazillion 10K (33:50 PR).  My ranking of easiest (#1) to toughest (#6) on perceived effort:

(disclaimer: I'm not saying an IM is easy!!!! and I don't think perceived effort is the best measure of which race is "hardest" - not really sure how to gauge that, but that's not what the OP is asking either.  I go absolutely balls to the walls for a 10k from start to finish (high perceived effort) but its over before you know it, that doesn't necessarily make it harder than an IM)

1. IM

2. 70.3 tri

3. Olympic tri

4. marathon

5. half marathon

6. 10K

Interesting question! There are two aspects to this, the mental and physical effort.  Sprints and 5k/10k for me are harder, they're RPE 8+ efforts and take a lot of effort physically and mentally to do.  My recent 70.3 was way different, it was such a different feeling were I wasn't going 100% the whole time, the mental focus effort was the deal since the RPE was only about 4-6.  Haven't done a 1/2 mary yet and haven't found a groove in an Oly yet since I got "into shape" this year, I can see were these could be comparable.

This is odd, but I would say that it has a lot to do with experience. Also, I took notice to the language, saying running a marathon vs. pacing an Ironman. Possibly depends on what they mean by pacing.

Heck, I think 5ks are hard, and totally suck. But I also consider them a "sprint".

it really depends on the goal you set for yourself.

any race can be your hardest, be that a 10k, a half IM, an IM or a marathon. the reason why a lot of people think that an IM is not harder than a stand alone marathon is because they're planning on walking some of the run. that takes a lot of the strain out of it. if you go all out during the marathon of an IM you'll wish somebody would take mercy and shoot you during the last 6 miles.

Doesn't it really just depend on your purpose in the race and your definition of "hard" - as alluded to by birkierunner?

Of course, there's a limit to that.  I don't think it's reasonable to suggest that an all out 5K could be "harder" than an IM.  But a slow paced marathon could be "easier" than a PR attempt at a HIM, and vice versa, couldn't it?

methinks that birkie judged by the rate of recovery!

that's actually what stays with people way more than the pain of the event. it's an evolutionary thing - don't repeat what makes you hurts afterwards...

of course evolution's efforts are lost on us endurance idiots

Not sure why you say that, but whatever.....  A 10k is the easiest to recover from for me but I listed it as toughest perceived effort.  I judged (and thought that I wrote the same) by the perceived effort during the event itself without regard to recovery.  Maybe I mis-interpreted the original question but my list stands as is.

I read the question the same way as Birkie.  Think it's an odd question, but my ranking would be similar easiest to hardest on perceived effort (note I have not done a 140.6 yet so I'm guessing here)

140.6 Tri

70.3 Tri

Marathon

Oly Tri

Sprint Tri

Half-Marathon

10K
