Pre-race routine:

Alarm rang at 6:15, and I turned it off and rolled over thinking, I'm just going to lay here for five minutes or so. When I opened my eyes again it was 7:23; and the race starting at 8:00. With a half hour drive from Columbia to Main Street in Laurel, I knew I'd be cutting it close to make it. After grabbing a cup of hot tea, and breaking all the speed limits, I arrived at the race site at 7:52 to find no parking. I had to park about two and a half blocks away. I left my outer layers in the car, deciding to run the race in shorts and a long sleeve T-shirt.
Event warmup:

Unintended jogging from where I parked the car to the registration table. Arrived there at 7:56, got my packet and number and made it out to the starting line about 30 seconds before the race began.

Comments:

In my haste to get here on time, I forgot my Garmin 205, so I was running blind. Started near the front of the pack and got passed by more than a few people. Since I only resumed running about a month ago, I only had a modest goal of breaking 24:00. Hit the first mile split at 7:28, feeling somewhat winded. I thought that if I could continue this pace (fat chance), I'd be more than happy with my time. Hit the second mile split at 15:55, which meant that my second mile was at at 7:27 pace. I crossed the finish line at 23:11 (according to the race clock at the finish line) which wound up being a cumulative 7:27 pace. I cannot believe that I ran those miles that consistently. Have to say I'm pleased to be almost 50 seconds below my goal time. However, for whatever reason, my offical time is listed as 2 seconds slower at 23:13.
What would you do differently?:

Get up earlier so I'm not so stressed prior to the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around. It was chilly after the race, so I jogged back to the car to put on my sweats and jacket.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of speed training. I'll start the speed training and see if my 5K time improves when I do the Big Flats 5K Resolution Run on January 1st.

Event comments:

I think I'll make this an annual race every Thanksgiving.
