Subject: Tri Bike (Felt S32) as 1st Bike?
Hey All:
I've read a lot of the discussions of road bike vs. tri bike and think I should get a road bike as my first bike. However, I got a hook on a Brand new 2005 Felt S32 for $600 and it seems like too good a deal to pass up. (And it's RED, so it will go really fast). The consensus on the board, however, seems to be get a road bike first, then either upgrade to tri bike, or if resources are good get a tri bike and keep both. I respect the opinions of you guys and just wanted some feedback.

I'm not quite couch to tri, but it has been awhile since I've ridden a bike. Thanks for the feedback.

Tim

It is an excellent deal.  Be sure NOT to pass it up!  As for the so-called "general concensus" about buying a road bike before buying a tri bike, that is debatable.  Get the tri-bike, you won't regret it.  I wouldn't use a tri-bike to commute to and from work but if you use it merely for training and for triathlons then you'll be okay.

Have you ever ridden a road bike before?  They handle quite differently than a mountain bike, compound this with the twitchier hanling of a tri bike and you could have some problems.  In the long run the handling problemswill go away but will your deise to compete in tris?  Just something to think about...

If it were my money Id get the tri bike assuming it fit, and the dealer didnt switch out the componets for sora etc.

Good luck with the bike!

Will you do any road races? If not then why spend money on a road bike.

I have a clip on bar on my road bike, and I never take it off. If you only want to do tri´s go for the tri bike.

I went straight from MTB to tri bike. It's going to be wierd for the longest time because as you said, the normal transition is road to tri. However, that is a good deal, and if you are going to be doing tris, i'd pick it up.

Just a little added note:  I can say from experience that a true tri bike is less "twitchy" than a road bike that has had aerobars installed on it.

That's a hella-good deal. I'd hate to pass that up; it would be a good way to get into a fine entry-level tri-bike for not much cash. I would certainly recommend that you take advantage of this deal.

That having been said, though . . .

I bought a brand new Felt S32 this season, moving directly to a tri-bike from a mountain bike. While I have appreciated having the tri bike to train and race on, now almost a year later, I kinda wished I had purchased a road bike. It turns out that my decision making at the time was based on an incorrect assumption: I figured that all my bike riding would either be training rides by myself or races. But it turns out that after I bought the tri bike, I started doing a bunch more group rides and touring kind of rides. And really, I wish I had a road bike to do that with.
