Subject: Endurance Athletes' Skin Cancer Risk

Yahoo News posted a recent article about this:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061121/ap_on_he_me/fitness_marathoners_cancer

Those who spend many hours training outdoors have a higher risk of skin cancers than others.  Is that kind of, um, stating the obvious?

I've read advice for runners elsewhere that said, "don't wear sunscreen, it will interfere with your sweating (and therefore body temperature regulation)."  Well, I'm particularly sun-sensitive so I ignore that & wear the highest SPFs around, plus a hat for running.

Do you think about this when you train?

I'm a pale, auburn-haired girl living in the south. Oh yeah I think about this. I try to do most of my training in the early morning or evening. And I always slather on the SPF 30. I don't care how pastey I look. Heck, I don't tan anyhow. Just lots of freckles. Also wear sunglasses. Got to protect the eyes from UV rays, too.

I live in the desert and slather on SPF 45 sunscreen and wear sunglasses year round.

I'm actually more worried about breathing in pollutants and getting sick from that than skin cancer.
