Open Water hits the theaters this weekend. It got rave reviews at Sundance (apparently). It's supposed to be sort of terrifying...

Some sort of intriguing ending, but the gist of it, is a couple goes scuba diving 20 miles from the coast and when they return to the surface, their boat is gone.

So.... my question is, as a triathlete do you go or don't you???? (the title of the movie caught my eye, obviously... and I'm intrigued, but I'm not sure if I can take it.)

This has actually happened to 2 people that I'm aware of, one was rescued, the other never found. Seems some dive operators don't quite know how to count.

As a triathlete, this doesn't really bother me. As an avid scuba diver, lets just say that I'm glad this didn't come out until after my dive vacation this year. I guess that explains why the divemaster on our boat counted all of the divers like 4 times before we left each dive site.

As a tri-virgin, the thought of this movie scares the bejeezus out of me. My first is in September and includes a 1/2 mile open water swim.

I'm already petrified of the thought of flailing arms and legs....as well as shortness of breath....and maybe even drowning. I think I'll keep sharks out of the mix for now.

I've seen dozens of sharks underwater while diving and they have never spooked me at all. However, I am terrified of open water swims in the ocean. I guess it has something to do with the wetsuit making me look like a very large sea lion.

I love having the crap scared out of me at movies LOL, but I don't think I want to see this one. I have just started doing lake swims and I am freaked out enough with out being able to see the bottom, I don't need to have stupid thoughts of sharks or other things lurking below the water ready attack me.

Unlike FitMama, I HATE having the crap scared out of me in a movie.  I agree with Dana, I'm waiting until the DVD comes out - and it will be off season, so maybe I'll be ok with getting back in the water later.

Just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water. Did anyone see the story of the California diver that was killed by the 16 ft shark over the weekend. His headless bady was later found by police. By the way Open Water opens nationally on Friday. Between this movie and this shark death story, I think I'll just stick to the lake for my swims.

I have never really been scared to scuba dive with sharks, but stories like this always make me a little nervous for a while.

I love scuba diving and would not hesitate to go in the water at any time. I have seen several sharks in my diving adventures and have been more curious about them than they were me probably.

PADI and several of the other diving organizations are coming up with a new strategy to help overcome the problem of this. Of course, I am like everyone else, not real hard to know you started with 15 divers and only have 14 on board.

This movie is based on a real scuba diving adventure when a couple was left behind. They were never found. It is indeed scary but not for the reasons that many people think. The shark scenes were filmed with real sharks and are not "Jaws-like," at all. Like the other scuba diver said sharks are more curious than killers (unless it's feeding time ) when it comes to divers. The filmakers took special pains not to make it a shark attack movie. I think the couple have a more difficult time dealing with each other than the wild.

But the scary thing for me is the open water aspect. I'm a strong swimmer. But I still get freaked out about Open Water. I'm debating whether I should go see this movie. I think I'll wait until after tri season. That way I'll ahve about five months to get over the trauma.
