Subject: Tri Season Over - Time to Introduce!
I Figured I'd introduce myself (I'll follow Jasmine's lead) - I never did to begin with, just sort of start posting and scouring the site for info.

I'm a 30 yr old graduate student at Western Michigan University studying Modern Democratic Theory. I also love the classics. Cool stuff.

The only sport I did in HS was swimming...but was very competitive and made state cut's in two events (500 and 200 free).

Fast forward 7 yrs. After years of inactivity I weighed 250lbs. 40-42 inch waist. OUCH. I decided to make a change. I started running; and the pounds began to melt away. I then became ADDICTED to running (I have a very addictive/ competitive/ driven personality - which is very helpful in losing weight). I ran my first marathon (5:55) after only a year of running. By now my weight had plummeted to 150, with a 30 inch waist! That summer I also did my first tri, a sprint, with a minimal amount of bike and swim training. I wanted to get into tri's because I figured I'd be good at them, being a swimmer/ run, and have been hooked ever since.

Since that inaugural summer I've been adding to my game. I've rediscovered my love (and some lost speed) for swimming, and club swim in the winter and swim with my HS team over the winter break...and well...I did my second marathon this spring and dropped over an hour!

The bike is my nemesis. It's very grating seeing EVERYONE pass me on the bike after I've built a big lead in the swim. Grrr. I'm getting better, though.

Last summer I was on shelf with IT band woes. So. Damn. Frustrating. I came back with a fury this year, and have done 2 oly's, a sprint, a marathon, 1/2 marathon and a 1/2 ironman!

Greg

Holy schmoly Greg!!! You're an animal! Glad you were able to come back from the IT woes!!

Congrats on the 1/2 IM...that's more than my body could probably handle. But maybe someday when I get insane!!!

Isn't this addicting? I think I have an exercise addiction for sure. At least I don't go too overboard...yet.

Anyway, I send an official welcome your way! Oh, and modern democratic theory...wow!

Happy training!

Welcome Greg!  With that list of athletic adventures this year, I'd have to agree, you are driven!  Great job

Thanks for the welcome!

IT band injury really SUCKED. There's few things worse than the combination of a willing mind and an unwilling body.

PS - there's a pic on the frontpage of the pamphlet that shows several runners trouncing across a KNEE DEEP creek.

Welcome Greg! Congrats on your great season!

I can totally relate to the IT bank issues. What did you find helped the most? I went to PT for a few months and still have to keep up the stretching religiously or it comes right back.

I guess I should also jump in. I just got back into the Tri world after 10 years. In 1994 I completed the Florida Ironman after which I went into such a depression that I gave up completly. I finished in 11 hours but after training for almost 2 years when it was over I was lost, "now what" was my mind set. I ended up moving to South Africa for a job assignment and fell into a number of bad habits drinking, smoking, overeating etc. I went up to 235 lbs and just recently became sick of my life of just work, work, and more work. So one month ago I quit smoking, went out and bought a new road bike and began my come back. I've been swimming 1/2 mile 5 days a week and am up to 20 miles on the bike. Running is killing me but I know it will also come back. I've dropped 10 pounds already and am planning on doing a sprint the end of Sept. From there it's going to be a fall and winter of training so I can enter the 1/2 IM in Kona May 29th 05. It's amazing how much better I feel already and after speaking with some local triathletes I've learned that I'm not alone in the post race depression and I don't plan on stopping the tri life again!

Yeah, I'm planning on doing the Detroit Marathon, Daryll. I started a 12 week, 70 mile per week program, last week. I did 15 miles today...I'm not really happy with my current splits, though. I'm going to be seriously depressed if I don't run a 3:45 (or under). That's the thing about marathons...months of work, and sweat, and pain, that all boils down to a few hours. And if you miss your goal time, sheesh...don't want to think about it. Oh yeah. The pain. Can't forget that. Nothing like marathon pain. Not pleasant...

Kelly - I didn't do any therapy for the IT band. I basically just shut myself down for about 3 months and pounded the ibuprofin (2400 mg a day). The thing was, I could run about a mile pain free. But once I got past that mile, my knee always started to ache.

I encourage you to keep it up, Dan. An Ironman. Geezes. I got a bit of the blah's myself after I did my half ironman. Sort of the "what do I do now?" thing.

It'll probably take you a while to get back into shape...but you'll be happier, and feel better about yourself, when you do. Trust me on that. I feel sooo much more confident without that extra 100lbs.

Plus, once you get back in the swing, your metabolism will speed up...and you can eat more. I eat a TON.

And not only do I swim like a fish, I drink like one too!

It's amazing how quickly the energy returns along the confidence. Knowing that I did it before takes away the guessing. I have a co-worker who is doing the IM in Canada the end of this month and he's stoked! One good thing about Tri's is you learn sooo much from each one you do.

I agree with you greg, about the marathon anxiety...the week before is the worst, 'what if i don't? etc, etc.'...3:45 is an awesome target, I am shooting for sub 4...have to do some long run catchup, after lansing this week...I, too was once 280lbs, played HS Football and Junior 'A' Hockey, than, didn't play competitive sports through university...too many cervesa's, and voila...280...My adjustment over the past few years has been not only to become an athletic body again, but to change the type of athletics, after playing 'short twitch' sports all of my life, to become an endurance athlete...only advice is to keep a pic, of 'old' you somewhere prominent, so when you start to feel like giving up, you look at how easily it can come back...usually the great motivator, for the first year, then internal self discipline takes over...

280! Wow, Daryll. Congrats!

Man. How tall are you? When I weighed 250...yeesh. I can't imagine what an additional 30lbs would've felt like (I'm a shade under 6ft).

I keep my old driver license in my wallet as a reminder of past life (and to show-off ).

It really goes to show how powerful the mind can be...change can happen (and I know that people like us are inspirations for others, too).

If I wasn't going to Hell on Saturday, I'd make the trip to EL. It would be neat to watch a tri for a change. G/L. Remember to absorb and enjoy the experience, especially the swim! ;-)
