Have you picked out your tuneup race for IMCal yet?

Because the race is so early in the season, there are not too many to choose from:

02/11/2006 - Redlands Triathlon
03/10/2006 - Pasadena Triathlon
03/10/2006 - San Vicente Triathlon
03/25/2006 - Strawberry Fields

There might be others out there that are not on the normal race calendars. (RacePlace, Active.com etc.)

If you are so inclined, for the good of the group, please post your planned tuneup race; And if the race is not listed above, please tell us a bit about the race.

I was thinking about this issue since I got the Strawberry Fields email that registration is open.  Here's my current thinking.

1.  Does Cali HIM really need a tuneup (for me?)  this is a test the distance race for me.  I know I can go the distances, but pacing and nutrition are all new.

2.  What could I test in these short distances?  Too short really to practice nutrition.  So the only specific things I would be able to practice in these shorter races is really all about transitions and, since it's a pacing thing, I am not worried about shaving :30 seconds off T1.

3.  I looked up redlands, pasadena and san vicente - these are all reverse tris of some sort with a swim at the end, not sure any of those would help in any event.

4.  Strawberry Fields is the week before.  I think that's a little close to the HIM.  And last year they canceled the swim due to a wicked current and large surf, and had us run through thigh deep  water for 500 yards as the "siwm leg" (which is ironic since they are calling 2007 the "inaugural" duathlon :^).  That first leg screwed my thighs up more than anything.

So, other than sort of a "get in race mode" sense, I am not sure I am doing a tuneup tri.

I'd like to hear others' thoughts on this issue

Thanks. I may do the Pasadena Tri since it isn't too far. Reverse tri and it finishes in the pool in Pasadena (nice pool).

I'm interested in Pasadena, just because it's in my backyard (so to speak) and looks like fun.

I agree with Chris that it has limited utility as a tune-up for 70.3, and I'm already hard-pressed for recovery time because I'm registered for the LA Marathon on March 4. But good judgment isn't my strong suit, so I may do it anyway just for kicks.

Sounds to me like you already have your tuneup race scheduled. (LAM)

For me anyway, Tuneup races are not "Dress Rehersals" for the real thing. Rather, they are events to bring the whole training cycle to a finer focus of intensity. IT is also good for the mind to get some extra time in "Race Mode".

I did an Olympic as a Tuneup for a Marathon earlier in the year with great results; Surely a Marathon will be great for the 70.3 Distance.

I am still trying to work out the Training Schedule logistics but am thinking of doing either:

Redlands Triathlon, 02/11/2006
Palm Springs Half Marathon, 02/18/2006

If push comes to shove, I may actually do both of them. For me anyway, a Tuneup race is not a "Dress Reshersal" for the "A" Race. Other distances and styles of races work great as a Tuneup. (At least for me)

Oh, and it seems like the current RD method is to run Pool based Triathlons in reverse; Not certain if this really helps or not.

A bunch of people, including me, are doing the Pacific Shoreline Half-Marathon and Marathon -- marathon is sold-out. It is February 2nd.

And some of us are riding our bikes down the day before for packet pickup

Sounds like I might have to think about doing PacShore.

I have always avoided this race because it sells out so quickly but have never considered doing the half.

Should be a lot of fun since I grew up surfing the Cliffs and Golden West as a wee lad

Thanks Guys, I just signed up for the half.

I doubt if I will ride the whole way up on Saturday to the packet pickup as that is probably about 140 Miles Round Trip. What I might do is drive up and park at maybe Trestles or Salt Creek and Ride from there. (Need to think about it for a bit)

Thanks for the Tip

Cool.  I was going to say we should have a meet and ride there, but you're from the south, I'm from the north.  It'd never work out... we're just too different....

I may rethink the ride from the north, we have to go through some crappy areas to get to Long Beach and PCH.

Your thoughts for the Strawberry Field 2007 "Inaugural" Duathlon made me laugh off my chair !
I was there also and it really sucked to have to run through thigh deep water in a borrowed wetsuit.
This after spending a few swimming sessions in the Pacific before the event to get ready. But as the saying goes :
What does not kill you will make you stronger !

Still toying with the idea of doing this race . But I will have to get in some long bike rides and bricks in to be in shape.
Will probably choose a sprint tri a month before as a tuneup. Closer to my home the better. Also for running focus I am planning to do the Feb 11 Firecracker 10k .
