New studies done by hospitals in Boston and Germany have quasi-determined that the stresses of marathon running can unexpectedly trigger pent-up cardiac issues, possibly leading to heart attacks and other unpleastries.

I don't believe I will stop running just yet...

Yeah. And all those people in the scooters at Walmart are in them because of running injuries...

Thank you for a new fact.  I read it online therefore it must be a fact.  No one, especially Marmahe'sourDaddy, would state sarcasm without using the Marmahe'sourDaddy approved sarcasm font.  Therefore it MUST be a fact.

Right. Because I would never forget that it exists even though I created it.

I'm gonna file this study under the "Yeah, no kidding" file.

There's a reason stress tests are done on treadmills.  Working your heart so that it requires more oxygen and blood flow is the way to bring out signs of blockages.  Hmmm...sorta similar to running.

Exactly - seems odd they needed to commission a study to find out that marathons are stressful, and that if you have an underlying symptom of heart disease it may just may choose that moment to manifest itself.

Oy.

And falling never killed anyone.  It's the sudden stops.  Can I get grant money to study that some more?

You work on that...I'll be busy studying the inability to breathe while swimming underwater phenomenon.

Now, to gather volunteers so we can complete these studies.

Is the shark tank at the Shed Aquarium considered a pool or an ocean (simulated)??  Hmmm, might contradict that study if it's considered a pool.

In a similar study it was determined that 50% of the people tested were above the median age but the shocking news was that 50% were below the median age. A new study is planned to determine how many were exactly the median age...federal funding pending.

But seriously, I have read somewhere (can't recall where) that no one has died of heart related illnesses with ten years of completing a marathon. So assuming you make it to the end of the run you are pretty sweet for the next decade!!

My academic advisor is currently serving a two year sentence term at the NSF (National Science Foundation).  He is one of the people who decides which proposals get funding and which ones don't.

According to him he's seen some really doozy's of proposals come across his desk that he passed on to the proper committe that were returned back to him earmarked for funding.

Ask him if he'd approve funding for this study:  Watching Bubbles ride her mountain bike leads to blindness and excessive hair growth in odd places.
