Subject: I need suggestions on a trainer!
I have never used a trainer before, so I was wondering if anyone felt like giving me some advice. I am not yet ver fast on a bike but I can ride for long periods of time. I am just wanting to continue training indoors this winter and would like to watch TV or maybe read a book while I am at it. Any tips or advice on which is the better brands ect.

I have a cyclops magnetic and really like it. I can get my HR up where it needs to be and I suggest getting some spinervals dvds and make sure you break it up and just dont ride the same  pace. Like some here say to ride fast you must ride fast! Hope this helps.

After burning out 3 of the Performance Bike Travel Trac's I upgraded to a CycleOps Fluid II.  Very happy with it- stable, quiet, and I can get my HR to whatever zone necessary (something I couldn't do with the Travel Trac's).

I just bought a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine.

I like it. Smooth, quiet, stable.....everything that I wanted in a trainer.

I also just purchased a Cycle Ops Fluid II.  I got it off ebay for $219 shipped.  As long as you get a trainer, that is the main thing.  If you can afford a fluid trainer $200 - $300 then do it...If it is not in your budget currently, then pick a mag trainer this year and upgrade next....but what ever you do...pick one up!

If your goal is getting faster, you might need to put down that book.  Yes, just being on the bike will help your endurance, so no problem watching TV or reading while doing that.  But that is not what you said you wanted to work on.  You should read up on some drills you can do on the trainer.  The Spinervals DVDs mentioned earlier are also very good.  (if a bit pricey)  Personally, I've found it difficult to focus on my form and drills with the TV on, much less reading anything.  (Plus, I imagine I would sweat all over the book or magazine.  Ugh.)

Here's another recent thread about trainers.  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

I too, just picked up the Cycle Ops Fluid II. Love it. It's quiet and it gives me a good workout. I occasionally watch a Spinervals video which helps break up the monotony. Sometimes I don't think I'm getting as good a workout but I'm at least putting in some saddle time. Don't want my a$$ hurting come spring!!

I have 2, and they're both great, but for different reasons. I have Kreitler rollers, which has significantly improved my pedaling efficiency. Before the rollers, I was a very rough rider, but it has been smoothed out quite a bit. But the rollers do require more concentration, and there's the risk of crashing.
I also have the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine. The design is pretty similar to the Cyclops Fluid 2, but it looks to be more durable. I have a few friends that have had their fluid trainers leak (including the Cyclops). I believe that the Kurt is the only model that addresses that issue. You can read more about this if you google "Kurt Kinetic leak". For me it was a shoot-out between the Cyclops and the Kurt. I went to my LBS and rode both. I liked the Kurt for the feel and durability, but its not cheap ~275-300 with a spinervals DVD and a QR skewer... - Good luck

I really like the Kurt Kinetic trainer I have. As an added bonus it came with a free Spinervals d.v.d. and was on sale for $249.00. Look around and you should be able to still find that type of deal.

You sound kinda like me. slow but steady .

I got the cycleops Mag trainer and I like it but it is way too loud. I have to have the tv all the way up in order to hear anything. I been thinking of upgrading myself but I can not afford the computrainer so thinking about my next best option which may ever be a cheaper computer driven trainer or fuild trainer.

I did the same and got my CycleOps Fluid II off of e-Bay for a similar price.  While I do not love doing trainer rides, I do love my trainer ... easy to hook the bike into and buttery smoooooooth.

You might want to consider getting a mat and a sweat guard for your bike.  I was amazed at how much sweat I produced while riding and these will protect your floor and bike.

Not sure about your budget, but if it's tight then Nashbar entry level trainer is a decent choice & has performed very well for me - no complaints.

FYI- the Nashbar and Performance Bike branded trainers are the exact same piece of equipment with a different color scheme.  If you decide to go this route, see which one is having a better sale that day...
