Story:
I quit smoking in 2003 after 27 years. I was also a total non-athlete. A few months after I quit, I started running a bit which led to the crazy idea to do a triathlon. When I started training, I was unable to swim a full lap in a pool, hadn't been on a bike in years and could run 3 miles at an 11 minute pace (which isn't too bad, really). I used the 16 week Swim Focused Sprint Plan from here, but in retrospect I didn't follow it as well as I could have.

I loved my first race. I don't know what I enjoyed more: being at the start, or crossing the finish. I barely completed the swim and did the bike leg on 15 year old hybrid. I came in 15 of 16 in my age group. I consider completing that race one of my greatest accomplishments.

This past summer was my third year doing triathlons. I completed 2 sprints, 2 Olympics and 2 half iron distance races. Next season will see a few more half irons, and assorted Olympics/Sprints.

Family:
Married 43 year old father of 2 kids, 4 and 6 years old. My wife is a triathlete too. Life is busy with a career, kids, house, training, church commitments, occasional gigs with a band and my wife is in graduate school full time. I also work here on BT doing customer service and some development of new features.

Training:
I start training for my first marathon this month, and base building for half iron distance racing in January. I like following detailed training plans and using gadgets/graphs etc to analyze the data.

Weight:
Losing weight wasn't a goal of training, but I'm currently down 25 lbs from my maximum weight. I don't really focus on weight though, I focus on fitness. Weight is just one facet.

Advice:
I've found that staying with a training regimen can be tough, but it absolutely can be done. There are some things you can do at the outset that will greatly increase your chances. A mentor is one of those things. Don't be shy. Triathlon is about overcoming obstacles and most of them are encountered long before race day. That's what makes getting to the starting line so sweet.

I will jump in and be the 1st (since I did suggest this idea a a month ago). I use no plan at this time, do not have excess to pool (will work on that). Story similar to yours: 50 yo and have a 4 & 6 yo and I STILL smoke (another obstacle to overcome). My wife is not very supportive at this time, but we will see. Just started in here a couple months ago so I am at the bottom of the learning curve.

Thanks for any help
Brian

P.S. I am reading the Triathletes Bible

Mike I would like to join your group.

I am 22, and my roommate convinced me to train for a triathlon in may. I was very athletic and active in high school and the start of college but have really fallen off since then. I have a job for the next 7 months that allows me almost all the time I need for training so I am ready for the time committment. I have quite a few pounds I could shed since I gained a lot since I stopped playing waterpolo in college. I have only been training for 5 days now, but I am excited and enjoying it so far. I miss being active like I was in high school and want to get back to those days. I did one triathlon back in my senior year of high schoo, sprint distance, and did a number of mt. bike races back then. Running is definitely my weakness.

I look forward to getting advice and motivation from a mentor.

Brad

Edit: me and my roommate are doing the 20 week, 3x balanced oly plan.

I'd love to be your mentee Mike if you still have room!  You sent me one of my 1st Inspires and I thought that that was really neat!

I am 39 Yrs old and currently weigh 240lb.  Nobody believes I weigh that much, but it is what it is.  The giant thighs hide most of my weight.  I quit smoking, for the 2nd time, 2 months ago and I didn't want a repeat of the 1st time I quit.  I gained 40lbs.  I went back to smoking after the events of Sept 11 had me on the verge of losing my mind and sanity.  After 5 years of grieving, I was tired of disrespecting the memories of my friends by not savoring everyday as if it were my last.  I get great inspiration from thinking about them and what would they do if they had 1 more day back. When it came time to quit smoking this time I had a plan, joined a gym and began exercising so not to gain weight.  It worked!

I've always wanted to complete a tri of any distance and since I will be 40 in a week I thought what a great mid life crisis to have.  I related a lot to Brian's story in that I haven't really received the support from my wife and others that I feel I should have.  In fairness to them, a little of 2 months ago, I was smoking 1 pack per day and eating sweets as if they were oxygen.  They are starting to come around.

We can get more into this later.  My goal is to complete (respectably) an OLY in Sept. and HIM in 2008, maybe a full at end of 2008.

Mike is there room for little me in your group

I joined this site back in August with no experience in swimming, running or cycling.

Did my first 10k back in Oct which I found gave me a real buzz.

Next year will be my first year of tris and I hope to complete a couple of sprints and couple of Olys.

Background:
I'm 27 and based in London. Have always been a very active person playing lots of different sports (field hockey, tennis, squash etc.) but decided this year that I've shied away from aerobic activity for long enough (my biggest weakness is that I tend to be naturally lazy). I wouldn't say I love any of the disciplines but am hoping with a little hard work and motivation that I will feel fitter, healthier and faster over time.

Time seems to be my biggest limitor with my job taking up most of my time. I try and train before work during the week and at weekends. I also like the idea of using technology and gadgets to track my training but need a lot of guidance to help me get the most ot of them. Overall I am looking for general guidance and encouragement to help me be the best I can

I will fill in the rest later as I'm currently sitting in a Paris airport on my way to holiday in South Africa (will have been stuck here 24 hours by the time we leave!) - also trying to use a french keyboard which is annoying me a lot as all the letters are in the wrong place. If you don't hear from me in next couple of weeks I will return - probably just have limited access to e-mail.

Really looking forward to being part of this team - thanks for volunteering to do this Mike

Hi everyone, this is great! I hope you'll add each other to your 'friends' list. Having a few people to check on your training and help motivate each other is incredibly valuable.

I see some of your are already registered for races, that's great. Registering for my first race was the single most motivating thing for me. There was no backing out at that point.

Hey Mike:

Not sure when this all kicks off, but since you asked about a training plan in PM, I'll open it up here.  As of right now, I have no plan. My race scheduling had no forethought or planning whatsoever.  I just wanted to commit to races, so I can't back out.  In retrospect, I understand now about scheduling "A", "B", "C" races etc.  With that said, here's my schedule:

April 22 Mini-Sprint (1st Event ever)!  18 weeks away

June 17 Sprint (14 m Bike) 26 weeks away

July 8 Sprint (8 mile bike) 29 weeks away

Sept 16 Olympic (39 weeks away"A" race?

Sept 30 HIM (41 weeks away)- NOT Registered, just a dream, but too close to OLY.

I was looking at the 20 week 3x week OLY balanced, maybe do it twice before my OLY??

Because my wife and I work opposite shifts and I watch our son during the morning hours almost all of my run/swim training will have to be done at gym, with almost all bike training on trainer.  I may get 2-3 hrs on weekends for outdoor training. (Hope this doesn't cause too much of a hassle).  Anyway thats where I am at.  I currently do not use/or have an HRM, but I can comfortably swim 1 hr+, run 1hr bike 1hr.  But not really sure if I am pushing too hard, or not hard enough. As for the saddle on bike, I didn't get numb when I rode on road, only on the trainer? I will look into new saddles either way.

Thanks again and I look forward to hearing back from you on that training plan.

Tim

Hi all...

Mike was kind enough to let me join the group after a bit of pleading...  quick background...

Am 35, married with a 16-month old and another one due in August... was always very athletic in high school and college.  While in grad school, I started smoking and stopped exercising.  Got married, happy, fat, and lazy.  Last March, my weight was up to about 200.  The doctor told me I needed to lose about 25 and somehow I started eating right and walking on the treadmill for an hour a day.  By July, I had lost 42 pounds.  Goal achieved, I needed something else.

I read about triathlons on Wikipedia and the line "Triathletes are extraordinarily fit..." appealed to me.  So I found this site, and here I am.  I'm doing some biking, a little running, and trying to get acclimated in the pool, but like Brian, I still smoke.  That needs to stop.  Soon.  Otherwise I won't be doing a triathlon.

I'm shooting for a sprint in May, another one in June, and a 3rd in July.  I had planned to do one in mid-August, but my wife's due date is 8/10, so that'll probably not happen.  Instead, I might attempt an Olympic distance in September.

Cheers to all and thanks for doing this Mike!!

I will begin my training plan on Monday December 18. I am planning on starting at Week 3 so the taper will coincide with my first race.  Mike I chose 20 week Sprint 3x Balanced.  My first mini-Sprint is 18 weeks away. After the mini, I plan on doing the 20 week 3x balanced, as my OLY will be 21 weeks from the mini.  I will have 2 other Sprints in between, so I will have to figure out a taper.

I know this will probably sounds hard headed, but should I follow the plans to a T, as long as life permits.  What I mean is if I am scheduled for 24 minutes on bike, but feel good can I go longer? Or should I stick to plan and cherish the rest? I kind of already know the answer, but need to hear it.

Thanks! Tim

I'm officially starting training for a marathon today, so it's a big day for both of us.

It's generally better to do a bit too little rather than a bit too much. You want to finish each workout feeling like you could go a little longer. This helps to prevent injuries. As you become accustomed to training and you get to know how your body responds to different workloads you'll be able to better gauge when it's ok to go longer. For now it's best to be conservative.

Being patient with your training can be tough but for endurance sports it's crucial.

Hey Mike,

I was thinking about doing to 0 to 1650 in six weeks swim program.  It's supposed to get you to be able to swim 1650 yards without stopping.  (ha!)  These are the yardages (3x a week) for each session:

week 1: 700 yards

week 2: 900 yards

week 3: 1250 yards

week 4: 1500 yards

week 5: 1600

week 6: 1650

doesn't this violate the 10% rule over the first few weeks?  should I be doing this, especially considering that currently, I have to rest for 30 seconds or more between 50s to get my breath back.

That's a swim program that I've heard recommended quite a bit. As long as you don't experience any pain and can do the workouts it starts with, I don't see why not.

Mike is obviously uncorking....errrr...getting started on the Holiday Cheer early, because he let me in to the group. I am REALLY excited to be doing this, and look forward to learning from all of you.

Story/Family:
I'm a 40 (as of last week) year old guy with a great wife and an 8 year old daughter. I work in sales and work out to beat stress. I was a teacher for five years before that.

I was an athlete in HS and college (track, soccer). Graduated and decided to take up smoking. I was up to a pack a day and finally got disgusted and quit. January 1st will be 10 years.

I became a teacher and coached high school track. Then I got into sales, I became more sedentary, and ballooned up to 220 lbs on a 6' frame. One day my wife looked at me as I was shaving and asked, "Why are you sticking your belly out like that?" I wasn't. I decided to make a wholesale lifestyle change. I lifted weights, educated myself on foods and how they work in the body, and started doing cardio.

I started cycling and running. Then, I saw a triathlon near my home two years ago, and thought I can do this. I focused my running and my cycling a little more, and figured my experience at the shore as a kid would suffice to allow me to survive my first tri swim. I finished...and I was hooked. Last year I did the same tri and LOVED it. Now, I want to expand to several races and build to a HIM. If I can do one this fall, I'll be ecstatic.

This year I was diagnosed with testicular cancer (August) and hit-and-run by a pickup truck (September) while riding my bike. I am sloooooooowly building up to triathlon strength again. I don't have the strength I did before all of this happened, but I'm sure happy to be moving forward.

Training:
I would like to learn how to train smarter. I am trying to get my run distance and pace up (cover 4-5 miles at a 10 minute/mile now), get a bicycle (since the accident--waiting for insurance...tick.......tock) and join a pool. That being said, I'm obviously run-focused and doing weights until the other two come through. I'd also like to be building my aerobic base...

Weight:
Like Marma, losing weight isn't a goal of training. That being said, I now weigh 192 lbs., down from that atrocious 220 from five years ago. I'd still like to lose another five, but am happy where I am for now.
