I believe there are a handful of people from central-ish TN in our group. I was just wondering if anybody would like to join me on Saturday morning at the Natchez Trace for a ride? I'm planning 2-2h30 (40 or 50 miles hopefully). If anyone's interested.

Anyone have any tips for riding in the wind. I was almost blown off my bike several times during yesterday's ride. To be honest it scared me half to death. Tips would be appreciated

I have experienced that alot here lately. My only advice is to make sure you are riding on big shouldered roads and lastly be careful.

I do not think there are any tips. I have ridden when it felt like I had to lean into the wind....which is scary. I just try to stay on the least traveled roads when it is that windy, low gear, and high cadence!!

Stay low.

Actually instead of that sterling advice I have a question of my own. How can I improve my pedaling technique? I am still new to all of this (less than 6 months) and I KNOW that my technique needs help, but I am not sure what do to or how to even know when I am doing it correctly. Any ideas or online articles any of you can throw at me?

My coach has me to do one legged drills on the trainer and focus on no dead spots at the top of the stroke. I usually warm up for a bit then  alternate each leg for a minute then the next and so on. I try to get a minimum of 10 minutes on each leg. I usually have a couple stools on each side and rest my leg on it. Another way if you have the money is to purchase power cranks. Hope this helps.

Here is something that might be helpful to each of us what is your nutrition regimen on long rides and runs??

I do each workout as if it is my 112 mile bike or my marathon excluding only workouts of just 45 minutes but each I stick to my plan and it works for me:

Bike: Hammer Gel every 45 minutes and then drink on the 15s my drink mix which is a GU2O carbo pro combo. And of course water after the gels and throughout.

Run: I run with hammer gels every 45 minutes and water. I wear a fuel belt that carries a flask and a full size water bottle.

On the bike I try and consume 200-250 calories per hour and on the run I have only used about 150 calories per hour.

Well, first of all I would recommend keeping your cadence around 90 rpm if you are not climbing. Also, another great way to help your pedal stroke is one-legged drills. I do them on the trainer or stationary bike b/c it could get dangerous on the road. Do those for 1-2 minutes each leg 4-5 times and you will see the difference. You want to make perfect circles obviously.

As far as cycling technique, get to a bike shop and let them look at your technique. There could be something that you are doing in your pedal stroke that we don't see, and what we don't see, we cannnot correct.

Be Civil, and anyone else interested, here is that link to the swimming website with all of the workouts. Go to the top forum group and you will see them.

Thanks for that cycling feedback folks. Very good info.

Got another question. Stretching. Now I read "never stretch muscles", or "never stretch at all", or "only stretch hamstrings", as compared to "stretch everything everyday" advice that I grew up with.

Anyone have the latest on that?

Ironman UK in August will be my first Ironman Distance Triathlon. Have the flu right now. Any tips for training when you feel like your head is going to explode. Have an adventure race (mountain bike and trail run) this weekend which is going to be a battle if my nose doesn't stop streaming

Best Wishes All.

I did a race after having the funk all week and I regretted it big time. They key is just make sure you are hydrated and well rested. I was unable to do both and paid dearly. Wish you the best this weekend!!

I have always heard warmup slowly and make sure you stretch after at the end thats the most important. I have heard that you dont want to be too loose before you start. But I do stretch every day I workout.
