OK group. I'd like to upgrade to be a performance member. Anyone have a promotional code or know where I can find one?

Thanks!

FlyBoy172 - 2007-01-09 2:09 PM Just thought of something. Do any of you guys know a good place to download swimming videos? I'd love to see what it's supposed to look like. :-)

I used BT2007 for a 20% discount, but it supposedly expired 12/31 and was also supposedly only for renewals, but it might still work...

I'm down too. 4 pounds this week. (Don't know what that equates to in kilograms, but I love it.

Maybe I won't be a Clydesdale when this is all over.

4 lbs is about 1.8Kg. That's great going!

What's the definition of a clydesdale btw?

I always heard a Clydesdale was a male triathlete over 200 lbs. You know, like the big horses that pull the Budweiser beer wagon.

I use to be a Clydesdale. Keep up the hard work. It really pays off. I had to get my suits altered.

Got a question about the functions here.

I've entered all my measurements, but is there any way to get a graph out of the numbers?

Been reading the total immersion books for a week now. It seems SO right (in theory) It makes a lot of sense. Just as Terry L. writes in the book i thought freestyle swimming was about using the arms as fast as possible to drag the body through the water. :-)

I had a hard time "getting" it, but after the DVD landed in the mailbox yesterday i finally see exactly how they mean.

It looks SO easy when they do it, but i guess they've been at it for years and years.

Finally another few questions for you guys:

How proficcient are you at swimming?
Do you use the TI-method?
If not, why?
Where are you at timewise? (what distance does one mesure time over? 100m, 1000m?)

Guess all i have to do now is hit the pool one of these days and see if my new found TI knowledge can keep me from drowning.

I've been trying to do it from the book and I really struggle. We have a certified instructor here in Richmond but he's booked classes through the end of forever. It does sound great in theory, but I haven't noticed a reduction in strokes or an improvement in time. I do about 50 yds a minute. I have a feeling the lack of improvement is more me than TI. Keep posting about how the DVD helps, I might have to buy it.

I am about 50 seconds per 50 meters with a minute rest after every 500 meters. I would really like to improve my time also. I haven't read the TI book or seen the DVD. keep us posted on your progress. I might have to buy it also.

About graphing - if you go to your training log, underneath the first row of buttons (that say Programs, Articles, Race Log...) there is a row of white lettered commands (Blog, Calendar, Week, Month, Year, GRAPHS). Click on graphs and check out the different functions - I think it will graph weight and body fat at least.

About Total Immersion - I bought the book and started teaching myself to swim 2 years ago. What I got from the book was basically some general ideas - rotation, balance, rhythm, and keeping a "long vessel" (keeping your body stretched out through the water). I did not do the drills for any length of time. I did get the dvd and it definitely helped to illustrate what they were talking about in the book, but I still did not really stick with their progression (zipperskate, underswitch, all that stuff).

What probably helped me more was going to an actual swim clinic (they had underwater cameras and collegiate coaches) and getting some more direct feedback on what I was doing wrong.  The coaches there were very focused on teaching everyone that swimming fast has nothing to do with arm strength and how hard you can pull the water, but much more about core strength and rotational strength.  Putting in the longer swim workouts while training for ironman also helped to speed me up.

As far as speed goes, I've gone from over 2:00 per 100 yards down to about 1:30-1:40 per 100 in sprint races (5-600 yard swim). Still not fast by swimmer standards, but I'm pretty happy with it - I can at least stay close enough to the fish that I can catch them on the bike or the run

For what it's worth, there is a rule of thumb batted around here that says until you get under 19 minutes for a 1000 yard swim, you should focus more on technique and less on pure speed.  So they might suggest that since Bob can hold a good pace at this point, that getting faster for him would involve more speed intervals (for example 10 x 100 at 1:30 each, with 10 seconds rest in between), while for others doing drills and focusing on form and efficiency would reap the greatest gains. I think the idea would be that if you are a slower swimmer, that doing speed work would only reinforce bad habits. It's very similar to running in that regard - speed work should not be considered until a long period of aerobic base building has occurred and the person's form and efficiency has been maximized. As one coach put it, "speedwork is the icing on the cake, and you don't have a cake yet."

You guys are doing a great job all around - keep up the great work!

Another week gone for me.

The week has been filled with ups and downs.

Upside is that i train more. Went to a new gym and tried the boxing they were doing. 90 minutes total, 15 minutes warm up, 60 minutes boxing and then 15 minutes cool down. SO HARD work. But i need it.

Downside, i only lost 0,4kg's this week. :-(

I've been eating some cakes, a little bit candy and stuff, that's why. It WILL stop.

Yeah...this week has flown by. I have family in town and haven't hade it to the gym in 3 days. Ouch. Shin is starting to recover. Hopefully by Feb 1, I will be back in full force.

I had a hellish week. My boss's boss (the CEO) fired my IT guy (he reports to me) and then said nevermind. This doesn't sound that bad, but my IT guy is getting 2-3 daily recruiter calls. With unemployment being @ 2.9% here in Utah he will be hard to replace in the short term. He is a great guy, is reliable and I need him as we are moving to a brand new (empty shell) in couple of months and he is responsible for the buildout. This week has sucked and I have eaten myself to death, not slept and slacked on the workouts.

On the bright note. My bike arrive today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woohooo!

Keep up the good work guys - the trick is to survive those nasty weeks without getting too down on your self, then picking right back up with the good habits and workouts.

Advice please:

I've been feeling sick for the past couple of days, along with being tired. My partner has pneumonia so I've spent a lot of time at the ER and a lot of time taking care of him, and I'm feeling achy and coughy. So, how do I know when to try to push through a workout and keep going and how do I know when I really need to slow down and take a couple of days off? Haven't trained since Friday morning and feel anxious and antsy while at the same time feeling like I really need the rest.
