Hey, new avatar....barely recognized you.  Good to see you are coming back so quickly.

Things are progressing in my camp.  I figure I will be starting out w/ week 1 of your train smart plan next week (waiting for Dr. clearance, 1/30).  I am OK on the bike, run will take awhile, and am hoping swim comes back quickly.  My HIM is still about 25/26 weeks away, so I am playing around w/ some training plans that I will need to run by you....

Subject: Recent progress

I've been posting my progress to date in the Challenge thread and I appreciate what you've laid out for us. I can feel the difference in my fitness level as far as distance and frequency of running goes. I can't tell about how it has affected my speed yet since I'm holding off doing another LTHR test until our six week challenge is done. I'll probably test the speed waters with a 5K race on Feb. 17th.

I'm still focusing mainly on running and swimming. With my swimming, I may be closing in on needing to do some speed work. I've brought my distance up to 1.5K without pausing and can repeat 1K's daily. I did this to prove to myself that covering the distance wasn't a fluke. Now, should I start working on speed, and how exactly do I go about doing it? FYI the pool is only 20yd so the drills would need to work in a small pool.

Hey guys,

 Looks like coachH and myself both have calf injuries.  Some of you have asked what I think caused it.    My PT and I may have discovered the problem.   Due to my ACL repair 20 years ago, I've never regained full range of motion in that leg.  Since I don't have a full range of motion (can't straighten it all the way), I have never been able to properly stretch the calf.   Improper stretching, too much strain on the calf.  Also, a few months ago I changed my running style from being a heel striker to a toe striker (evolution running method).  I believe that has put more strain on my calf.  I will continue to run that way as I believe it is better, my calves just were not quite ready for it.  I'm still not running, but I am strengthening, stretching and icing the calf daily.  I'm continuing to swim and bike, so that's good. 

I'm leaving tomorrow for a Disneyland vacation.  I'm excited for that, but the only training I would be able to do is run, but now I can't.  Oh well, I'll do something!

Hey Doug and CoachH, good luck recovering from those injuries.

Doug, I would be a bit more careful with the evolution running approach. IOW, it is great to improve your running technique but to have a drastic change from heel to forefoot striker is a big leap. Plus IMO running with a mid-foot stride is as efficient and without inducing so much stress on the calves.

Thanks for the input, Jorge.  I am actually more of a midfoot striker than a toe striker, but it still puts more stress on the calf.  I noticed that when I was running with the calf hurting that if I went back to heel striking, it didn't hurt nearly as much.

I saw this done in another Mentor Group thread and I thought we, too, needed to spark some conversation to increase our motivation for the upcoming season.  So, please fill out the following, in hopes of drumming up some more thoughts to help us become better athletes.

Longest Tri:
Longest Swim:
Longest Bike:
Longest Run:
Training Plan for the next month:

I will start.

Longest Tri: Olympic, last year
Longest Swim: 3000m.  This was continuous in the pool.  There is an 2 mile OWS in our area in July that I plan on doing this summer.
Longest Bike: 62 miles.  I never got off the bike, but if I went any longer, I would have had to take a break.  My plan is to do 100 this summer.
Longest Run: 13.1 miles.  This was a 1/2 marathon race.  My plan is to do a marathon this summer, so this will definitely be increased.
Training Plan for the next month: I just started w/ the train smart plan and will continue to do that for the next 3-4 weeks.  I am looking into training plans for my HIM.  The one that I like starts on Feb. 19th, so I need to see where I am at then, but hoping I can start with that.  Will be looking to Amiine and others on BT for advice.

Ultimately, would like to do an IM in 2008.

Longest Bike: 112

Longest Run:
Boston Marathon consecutive or a 30 Mile relay race
Training Plan for the next month:
TRAIN SMART! After we complete the 6 week preparation base phase, I will follow a 4 week base phase already adding some intensity and training on a 21 day cycle as 17/4 days ON/OFF. Meaning I’ll train 17 days increasing my volume and adding ‘a bit’ of intensity to a few sessions when ON and then work un recovery with very easy or even days off for 4 days when OFF. Then I’ll follow the same cycle through my build phase with less volume but more intensity for 4 more weeks. By April I’ll have my peak cycle (volume & intensity) and then I’ll just reduce my training to ultimately taper 1-2 weeks before my first 70.3 race of the season!

Hey guys!  I'm back from Disneyland and back in the saddle.  Man does it feel good to get back to working out.  Here's my list:

Longest Tri:    Never done one. 
Longest Swim:  800 Yards continuous in the pool.  2000 yards is the longest workout
Longest Bike:  3 1/2 hour mountain bike ride.  About 14 miles. 
Longest Run:  6 miles (before I injured myself)
Training Plan for the next month:  Up in the air due to my calf injury.  My volume should be up to about 9 hours per week.  I have a plan in place, but it's fluid right now depending on how much I can run.

Training Plan for the next month: Follow the train smart plan. I incorporate this into the monthly Swim + Run challenges as well.

I have 3 sprint Tri's planned for 2007, 1 duathlon, and whatever 5K & 10K races I can get in.

Longest Bike:  100K(Painful bike ride)
Longest Run:  Anchorage marathon (3:34)
Training Plan for the next month:  Stay healthy, jump back on TSTRFSmile.  Sprint Tris (May,June, August)....jump into a 5K or two...probably more just to stay around the RR scene.

Hey guys!

 Did my first run in a while a couple of days ago.  Just wanted to test out my calf and see if it was healed.  It's not, at least not completely, but I did an easy 3 mile run and walked about half of it.  My fitness was fine, I only walked to take it easy on the calf.  The good news is, it isn't sore and I think I may be able to run some more, but taking it very easy.

PM: I've got a duathlon in 2 weeks and I've never put the events back to back. This evening, I had the time so I tried out the 2mi, 15mi, 2mi duathlon events. The first 2 mi (16:19), the 15 mi bike (43:32) and the last 2 mi (18:18). I didn't push at race pace because I'm still wary of injuring myself in training. So I feel pretty good about how I'll handle the upcoming race.

I still have a ways to go before I'm where I want to be, but accomplishing this meant a lot to me. The next milestone, the race itself.

This is what I have been up to lately. I did not want to go into my first multiple-event race in two weeks without having some feel for what to expect. I've started practicing bike-run transitions to get a feel for running after biking.

Training is going well for me.  I've started some short, slow runs to work the calf.  It's still not 100%, but hopefully will get there soon.  Swimming and biking are going strong.  All my biking is indoors due to the snow outside.  I'm a slow as all get out swimmer, but I'm actually starting to enjoy it!  I'm a little frustrated about not being able to run, but I have to mentally get past that and focus on what I CAN do!

Today was my first race of 2007 and the first since I started to seriously train for anything. At the beginning of the mentoring program here is where my first LTHR test put me for running.

Ok... Did the LTHR run per the testing plan

  • warmed up 15 min with the last 5 min alternating 0:20 run and 0:20 walk
  • started time and started recording distance
  • at 10 min in, started heart rate monitor
  • at 30 min in, recorded distance and average heart rate

Here are the results average HR = 173 and pace = 5:38 min/km (9:00 min/mi)

So I was running at 9:00 min/mi at threshold. In today's 5K, I put in 4:39 min/km (7:16 min/mi)! I felt good through the whole race and lament only that I didn't warm up better or eat anything that morning. My wind didn't hold me back as much as a feeling of lowered energy. I'm blaming poor hydration or not eating. What would you think?

Anyway, I'm very happy with the results so far as this is faster than I'd ever been and I feel that I have room to improve.

great job! If yu continue patiently building up you WILL improve no question about. It is just a matter of do it over and over and over. Use the resu;st from the race to adjust your training paces and enjoy getting faster

I hope that everyone is doing well and on plan for their recoveries or races. Tomorrow is my first multi-event race (duathlon of 2mi/15mi/2mi). It is my first "B" race for this year and I'm very excited about it. This week has been taken easily with some swimming, biking, and running. I had one "hard" workout on the bike earlier in the week so it isn't affecting me now.

Wish me luck and I will let you guys know how it goes tomorrow (I do plan on eating and drinking-- water, in the morning).

Brad - Looking forward to reading your Race report!!!

I have been doing well in the recovery.  One more week of my modified train smarter, and I will be starting a 20 week training plan for my HIM.  The shoulder feels good, and the knee is getting stronger.  Its still not 100%, but it is coming along.

Keep it up everyone!  The season for us Northerners is right around the corner.

swim actually felt good. broken down into 500s.



 

Now to plan to get some running in.  I am actually quite nervous.  Don't recall last time I did any running prior to being hurt.  Have to find and see if my calf will hold out some how.  I'll go back to the logs to see just how much was my last run...could have been a 20 min. jog. 

Just did some back tracking....last run was back in early January.  I think I will bike tomorrow.  It is going to be dissappointing to come back to running and more problems  Frown.  Then again it hasn't happened yet.

Do hope this holds up guys....It has been a loooooong time since running.

How are the rest of you guys doing? I know Brad is been consistent and getting good improvements! CoachH, good luck at getting back into running. Doug, it seems you are back at training. Scott, I know you've been recovering positively from your knee injury. How are the sessions working out? Jayson, you’ve been MIA forever… My training is going well and even though I am currently taking a few days easy/off I am happy with my improvements so far and ready for more!

Come on guys post how things are working out!
